DONAIRE VS PONGSAKLEK TO PRODUCE RING MAGAZINE CHAMPION By Salven L. Lagumbay PhilBoxing.com Sat, 14 Jul 2007 ![]() ![]() Donaire (L), Pongsaklek (R). A showdown between WBC flyweight king Pongsaklek Wongjongkam and IBF flyweight boss Nonito Donaire is expected to settle the question as to who is the world's best flyweight fighter, and will get the Ring Magazine belt. This was the contention of Ring Magazine's Philippine correspondent Ted Lerner in an interview with this writer yesterday. Lerner informed that the Ring Magazine championship does not require any sanctioning fee, and therefore a possible fight between the two champions will not be difficult to make. Lerner suggested a fight between the two during the 45th WBC Convention in Manila set for November 11 to 17 at the historic Manila Hotel, which will be hosted by the Philippines. GAB Chairman Eric Buhain is leading the host country's efforts at coming up with a successful convention, assisted by GAB boxing division chief Nasser Cruz. "Championship vacancies can be filled by winning a box-off between The Ring’s number-one and number-two contenders, or, in certain instances, a box-off between our number-one and number-three contenders," says the Ring Magazine, in determining the new Ring champion in cases of vacancies. As of the moment, the Ring Magazine flyweight title is vacant, with WBC champ Pongsaklek installed as no. 1 while IBF champ Donaire is rated as no. 2. The Ring Ratings are compiled by the magazine’s editorial board, with the participation of The Ring Ratings Panel of boxing journalists from around the world, which includes Lerner.
