Arizona Boxing News & Notes with Don Smith: Servin Advances, Stone Update, Fights to Watch & More By Don Smith PhilBoxing.com Sun, 13 Sep 2015 Boxing Fans, Arizona female Olympic hopeful Ariel Arismendez (132 lb. division) took her first step in making the 2016 USA Olympic women?s boxing Team with a walkover victory Anna Crutchfield from South Carolina on Tuesday, September 8 in an Olympic Trials Qualifier 2 bout held in Baltimore Maryland. On the following night (9/8) Ariel met Tiara Brown, fighting out of Maryland and it was Ms. Brown who fought her way to a 3-0 victory thus advancing to the next round. Ariel returned home to loving fans that supported the college honor roll student 100% during her successful amateur boxing journey. We wish her the best and don?t be surprised if she decides to make her pro boxing debut before the arrival of 2016. Servin Advances: When Mike and Adrian Servin left Arizona for Philadelphia on Saturday 9/5, Mr. Servin was confident his 108 lb. boxing son could enter the Olympic qualifier 2 phase and advance as a 2016 Olympic qualifying light flyweight champion; so far, so good. Adrian defeated Geovanny Santiago 2-1 from Los Angeles California on 9/10 and earned a 3rd round TKO victory over Angel Rosa of Connecticut on Friday, 9/11 to earn a place in the qualifier 2 final on Saturday against 26 year old Leroy Davilla from New Jersey, 9/12. Win lose or draw in the final, Adrian advances to the final six in the box-off. As a special favor to this column, Adrian is jotting down some of his reflections and experiences and forwarding to me to be published as I see fit. I know what you are thinking, cheap labor?.shame on you. The Servins arrived on Saturday, rented a car and drove around Philly to see some of the sights including the famous steps captured in the Rocky movie starring Sylvester Stallone. The father and son tandem also ventured to Brooklyn, New York to the famous Gleason?s boxing gym where Adrian worked out. For the record, 182 world champions have worked out at the world famous boxing gym ($20.00 fee). I hope to extract more info from the two well-traveled men when they get home; hopefully with an invitation to the final box-offs in his division. I was glad to hear that USA Boxing Arizona contributed $500.00 towards the Servin Family boxing trip expenses. Teresa Arca, Gleason?s Gym) confirmed the visit and workout by Adrian Servin. Ms. Arca was unaware that the family paid a $20.00 workout fee and she told me the amount should have been waived because the kid was out of state and preparing for the Olympics; oh well! Forgiveness: In our last issue, I identified undefeated boxer middleweight Chris Pearson (real name) (12-0-9 knockouts) as Chris Pierson (wrong name) . I apologize to the 24 year old southpaw from Ohio who fought Janks Trotter (9-1-1 w/ 9 knockouts) on the undercard of the Mayweather/ Berto September 12 fight in Las Vegas. Trotter also has a BKB win under his belt, but that win is counted separately from his standard boxing victories. Pearson is trained by Floyd Mayweather Sr. and was signed by Al Haymon; Trotter should have his hands full-the bout is scheduled for 10 rounds. Trotter is trained by ?Cowboy? Dale Brown. I will be watching the Saturday fight at Twin Peaks (on Camelback Road in Phoenix) if anyone wants to stop by and chat, do so at your own risk; just kidding. The cover is $10.00 with a minimum spend of $ 15.00 on food and beverages per person. In addition to the Pearson spelling misfire, Ring Pros CEO Scott Malaing was identified as Scott Mailing and Scott Maling in previous columns. I met a friend of his at a recent party and he was kind enough to give me the correct spelling of Scott?s last name. The Arizona Boxing & MMA Commission still lists Maling as correct. His friend went on to say the boxing promoter and his mother owned horses. When the fellow party guest informed me he was supporting Donald Trump for President, I excused myself and headed for the salad bar. Stone Update: Several readers called or emailed me asking about the status of Damien Stone the former boxing mentor and gym manager who was arrested after allegedly propositioning and soliciting an undercover female police officer for sexual favors during the spring of 2014. Mr. Stone was arrested and freed on bail. He was appointed an attorney and his initial Maricopa County Superior Court appearance was made on 5/24/14. Since that date, his name has appeared on the court docket 25 times including several dates that were moved or canceled. His trial date is now set for 11/3/15 at the Maricopa County Superior Court House. Shortly after his arrest, Mr. Stone lost the lease to his Stone Hard Boxing Gym in Chandler and USA Boxing Arizona stripped him of his membership for fear that he was a danger to kids. The undercover officer who busted Stone told him she was 16 and she asked if her age (16) was a problem and the 41 year old parent replied not a problem. Stone met at a designated location carrying $160.00 cash and was arrested and booked. He was later released on bail. In the meantime, Mr. Stone has violated the intent of his ban (imposed by USA Boxing Arizona and seconded by USA Boxing) from working in the arena of Amateur Boxing. Numerous sources have spotted him working with kids in various gyms in and out of the state of Arizona; perhaps he needs an ankle bracelet to monitor his activities. As word spread about his covert maneuvering; Mr. Stone went to the internet and posted the following ad which is still running on Craig?s List: ?Stone Hard Boxing offers classes for men, women and children. We offer 1 on 1 lessons and small groups. Classes are for everyone ages 8 and up and space is limited. I am training out of my home for the time being. We offer personal training and extensive program for weight loss. Many people in our program lose weight and shape up without having to change their diet. We are also restarting our competitive boxing team.? Signed Damien Stone and he leaves a telephone number for prospective clients to call. He doesn?t mention his arrest and pending charges in his deceptive advertisement. . Also, Mr. Stone has numerous prior arrests and convictions including assault and sexual misconduct. You might think twice about signing up for boxing lessons and weight loss program with Mr. Damien Stone. Boxing Noise: Super middleweight David Benavidez (Fight Hard Promotions) upped his record to 11-0-10 knockouts with a 1st round knockout over Alberto Gutierrez on September 5?..few details emerging about upcoming Iron Boy shows at the Celebrity Theatre on September 26 and October 17. We do know the September show is with Roy Jones Jr. Promotions and the October 17 show is co-promoted by Top Rank?..If you plan to watch the Ronda Rousey vs. Holly Holm UFC fight on November 14at Twin Peaks on Camelback in Phoenix; arrive early for two obvious reasons: Ronda takes no prisoners and Twin Peaks will be packed; no cover at the door, but management is asking a $15.00 food and beverage spend per person?..Arizona boxer Edgar Brito will fight in California, September 26 on a Top Rank card; good to see the kid (3-1-1) back in action after a long layoff?..Boxing Coach Juan Mendoza (Mendoza Boxing) is taking three of his prize boxers to the National PAL Tournament in Oxnard California September 26-October 3. Making the trip with the coach are Fernando Martinez (open-114 lbs.), Luis Retana (Novice-114 lbs.) Bernardino Hernandez (novice ? 165 lbs.). Special Farewell: On October 17, Golden Cobra Center of Fitness & Vinnie?s New York Style Pizzeria will present New York Style ?Throw Down 3? in Cottonwood Arizona 86322 at 516 East State Route 89A. The main event features Cory Hines (Glendale, Arizona) vs. Ray Allen Jr. (Houston, Texas) for the IKF Junior Amateur Muay Thai United States Cruiserweight title (90.1-95 lbs.). The Semi-Main Event features Gilbert Pimentel from Chandler Arizona vs. Nicholas Salantri from Prescott, Arizona. At stake: IKF Amateur Muay Thai Arizona Middleweight Title 159-165 lbs. The show marks the end of a magnificent era for event host Richard Williams who is retiring as CEO of Golden Cobra Center of Fitness and the Center will be closing its? doors soon. Richard has spent the majority of his adult life as an athlete, promoter and CEO of a very influential non-profit organization that served disadvantaged youth. He will be missed and it would be a fitting tribute if his last show sold out. Expect special appearances by Sensei Walt Larson, Hanshi Nico Fernandez and Sensei Sam Plunkett. Entertainment provided by DJ-1 in the mix. Friends will confer, Williams is irreplaceable. Mr. Williams knows how to put on a good show. Attack on Arizona: Pedro Fernandez, Ring Talk, continues to rehash the Diaz/ McKinn 2004 bad check scandal in his daily muckraking column and on his provocative talk show. Members of the Arizona boxing community fear his irrational ranting?s may endanger the upcoming (October 14) ESPN televised fight in Glendale, Arizona. The fiery loudmouth dislikes Arizona Boxing with a passion; and he spares no one except his Arizona informant, Joe Diaz. For the record, Joe Diaz was an inferior boxing trainer who couldn?t wrap hands properly if you gave him two sets of ?How To? blueprints. In my opinion, Joe and Pedro conspired to smear the already tarnished Arizona boxing image and their double team campaign brought Arizona boxing to its? knees for five years until Iron Boy Promotions began pumping new life into the Arizona boxing scene and now several boxing entities including: Fight Hard, BMBP, Top Rank, Roy Jones Jr. Promotions and Wild West Boxing Promotions in Tucson, Arizona. Diaz headed for Montana after he won his case in court. McKinn went to jail and paid restitution for a check that was declared. During this period of bleak boxing history; both men were condemned for being bad for Arizona Boxing. Fernandez praised Diaz on a daily basis and voted the controversial boxing figure as trainer of the year in 2013 even though Diaz wasn?t training anyone at the time and his gym was closed after several mothers complained about Joe?s handling of their children; there were never any criminal charges filed. McKinn wasn?t considered the Golden child of boxing, either! I hope Fernandez stops his idiotic ranting?s carried in print and broadcast, but don?t hold your breath. Central Smoker Results: On September 5, Central Boxing Gym played host to 10 amateur bouts at a smoker event that was expected to be much larger, but it was competitive and well attended. Central volunteered to host the affair after Broadway Boxing canceled at the last minute. Maricopa County Sherriff Boxing Club won Team Trophy and 14 year old Joey Ruelas Jr. (Busted Knuckle Boxing) received the nod as fighter of the event. Here are the names of all 10 individual winners: Carlos Luzanilla (Central Boxing), Anthony Hernandez (J & C Boxing), Gadge Moffett (Taz Boxing), Diego Cruz (Unattached), Joey Ruelas Jr. (Busted Knuckle Boxing), Chris Bojorquez (Maricopa County Sheriff Boxing Club), James Rocha (Central Boxing Gym) , Thomas Valerio (Maricopa County Sheriff Boxing Club), Damian Valdiviezo (Phoenix Boys Center) and Myron Bridges (Unattached).
