DARCHINYAN VOWS TO KO DONAIRE
By Ronnie Nathanielsz PhilBoxing.com Wed, 16 May 2007
IBF and IBO flyweight champion Vic “The Raging Bull” Darchinyan has vowed to knock out Nonito “The Filipino Flash” Donaire in their title showdown at the Foxwoods Resort Casino in Connecticut on July 7.
Well known Australian boxing writer Ray Wheatley of the World of Boxing reported that Darchinyan was “not happy” over Donaire’s boast that he would KO the champion and avenge the sixth round technical decision loss suffered by his brother Glenn Donaire. Nonito made the statement after scoring an impressive first round knockout win last Saturday over tough journeyman Kevin Hudgins who had been stopped only once early in his career.
Donaire put on a classy performance using his superior skills to destroy Hudgins early in the opening round before nailing him with a perfectly-time hook forcing referee Jay Nady to call a halt at 2:28 seconds with Donaire all over Hudgins.
Darchinyan told Wheatley “I am confident I will score a knockout over Nonito Donaire. He has never met any boxer who can punch as hard as I do” adding “I think he should get a room in a hospital.”
The devastating puncher broke the jaw of Glenn Donaire in his sixth successful title defense on October 7, 2006 in Las Vegas. Darchinyan who has a record of 28-0 with 22 knockouts had also previously beaten another Filipino Diosdado Gabi over whom he scored an eighth round TKO on March 3, 2006.
Donaire who hails from General Santos City, the hometown of Filipino ring idol Manny Pacquiao is rated No. 3 by the WBC, No. 7 by the WBA and No. 6 by the WBO. He has an impressive record of 17-1 with 10 knockouts. Donaire’s only defeat was in the second fight of his pro career against Rosendo Sanchez on March 10, 2001.
