PACQUIAO-MARQUEZ 5 STILL POSSIBLE ACCORDING TO WBO By Maloney L. Samaco PhilBoxing.com Fri, 30 Aug 2013 Manny Pacquiao and Juan Manuel Marquez could fight in a fifth encounter possibly in 2014 according to World Boxing Organization President Francisco "Paco" Valcarcel. This could happen if Pacquiao will win against Brandon Rios in their clash on November 24 in The Venetian in Macao, China and if Marquez prevails over Timothy Bradley on October 12 at the Thomas and Mack Center in Las Vegas, Nevada. "If Marquez and Pacquiao both win, the World Boxing Organization regulations would view the Filipino as [the mandatory] challenger to Juan Manuel. Pacquiao goes against Rios for the WBO International title, while Marquez will attempt to capture the world welterweight championship of the WBO from Bradley. If both win the bout between them would be ready, but of course, the fighters have the last word," Valcarcel said in a report in notifight.com. If the classic fifth confrontation will push through, Pacquiao will try to erase the stigma of a devastating knockout face down inflicted by his boxing arch foe. But Marquez has been trying to elude the fifth meeting as he savored endlessly the sweet taste of a shocking KO unexpected to happen to an eight-division world champion. But Valcarcel however affirmed that the final say will be on both boxers. Pacquiao is very willing to engage in battle again to redeem his stinging loss. Marquez is like Floyd Mayweather, Jr. as he has been trying to escape from a fifth Pacman collision, citing one reason after another. Marquez quoted by badlefthook.com has this to say: "I'd rather stay with the memory of that 'lucky punch' that I connected on Pacquiao. It's about pride and honor, not money. That's why in that contest there was no championship at stake, only the WBO's Champion of The Decade belt. There are no plans [to fight after Bradley]. We'll leave this commitment first, and then see. First I want to see how I feel and if I plan continue with my career." One condition that Marquez proposed was to hold the fight in Mexico. He is afraid of another controversial decision turning the tide against him. ?We offered that to Team Pacquiao and they rejected it,? Marquez claimed in Lance Pugmire?s LA Times report. Marquez has been bragging to the whole world that he was cheated on the first three bouts. And that big KO win decided who was the real superior boxer. But Pacquiao fans insisted that the lucky punch saved the Mexican from an imminent defeat as he was down on points and his nose bloodied before the Knockout of the Year. There will be no other blockbuster fights in sight that could rake in millions of pay-per-view sales as Pacquiao-Marquez 5. And a win over Rios could not redeem Pacquiao from the nightmare. But a victory over Marquez would put the Filipino fighting solon again at par with Mayweather pound-for-pound. Click here to view a list of other articles written by Maloney L. Samaco. |
