Recarte Tiauson wins Canlaon chess By Marlon Bernardino PhilBoxing.com Sat, 04 Jul 2026 Recarte Tiauson of Talisay City, Negros Occidental beat all of his eight opponents before losing his final match against Ric Raymond Dela Pena of Bacolod City, Negros Occidental to win the Mayor Jose Chubasco Batchuk B. Cardenas Invitational FIDE rated chess tournament held at the Salta New Uptown Market, Canlaon City, Negros Oriental last Wednesday, July 1, 2026. Despite his loss to Dela Pena, Tiauson finished the 9-Round Swiss System tournament with 8.0 points to receive the top prize of P30,000 in the 1-day event being held to coincide the celebration of Canlaon City's Charter Day Anniversary. Tiauson defeated Jaime Barilea, Jay Dicen, John Jerick Canoy, FM Alekhine Nouri, Ted Ian Montoyo, NM Fritz Bryan Porras, NM Rolando Andador, Ian Cris Henry Udani in the first and eight rounds, respectively. He snapped his eight-match winning streak when he was beaten by Dela Pena. "I am very happy with my victory because almost all of the top players in Negros Island and nearby provinces joined the tournament," the 37-year-old Tiauson said in an interview on Friday. "I would like to thank the tournament director Elly Jimenez who is also the president of Talisay City, Negros Occidental Chess club and Chief Arbiter FM Rodolfo "Rudy" Toledo who supervised the said chessfest," added Tiauson, who placed third in Blitz and 4th in the Rapid division during the 2025 Asian Amateur Chess Championships in Hongkong. Porras split the points with Jordaine Tupaz in the last round to catch Dela Pena and share second to 3rd places with 7.5 points each. Porras settled second and got P20,000 while Dela Pena ended up third to earn P15,000. Andador and Romeo Sadia III finished the tournament with similar 7.0 points while Montoyo, Tupaz, Christian Pelione, and Udani have identical 6.5 points. Meanwhile, Allen Albor got superior tie break points over fellow six pointer Javier Adam Villadelgado to top the 12 years old kiddie category. The Tournament Director Ely Jimenez was assisted by Chief Arbiter FM Rodolfo "Rudy" Toledo.
