Brian Viloria wins WBO flyweight title with a 12 round UD win over Julio Cesar Miranda

Brian Viloria 28-3 (16 Kos) scored a hard earned unanimous decision victory against Mexican Julio Cesar Miranda 35-5-1 (28 Kos) in a thrilling fight at the Blaisdell Center arena of this city. Viloria started strong, knocking down Miranda in the opening round with a right hook. Miranda got up on his feet and recovered to finish the round. He traded with the attacking Villoria in the 3rd round and hurt the Filipino-American in the 4th round with an overhand left. He continued his assault on the 5th ,catching Viloria with combinations in the 5th which prompted the challenger to hold on to the Mexican champ.

Brian Viloria came back in the 6th with a huge right hook that landed on the champion and continued his attack with a combination of body and head shots in the following round. Miranda seemed to get his second wind in the 8th round as he catches the challenger with some good combinations. Viloria who has a history of fading late in his previous fights seemed to be feeling the effects of the brutal exchanges being dished out in this fight this early. He suffered a cut in this round on what looks like a punch from Miranda.

The cut seemed to slow Viloria in the 9th and 10th round as the tough Mexican continued to stalk him this time targeting the open wound on Viloria's right eye. Viloria held on to the attacking Miranda for most of the round enabling him to conserve energy and finish the round. Viloria used the ring in the 11th round as he circled around the champion who was encouraged by his corner to knock Viloria out.

The final round saw the two exhausted fighters exchanging blows with Viloria landing a huge right cross which the champ walked through. Viloria spent the last few seconds of the fight running away from the frustrated Miranda seemingly aware that he leads in the score cards. He dropped down on his knees with arms raised when the final bell sounded. The announcer announced the scores of 98-91, 96-93 and 97-93 for Viloria which was odd because it was a twelve round fight. With the win, Viloria claimed Miranda's WBO flyweight belt and more importantly a much needed boost at this stage of his career. This is Viloria's third world title having won two world titles at the light flyweight division.
