Pacman–Barrera Rematch: Maxwell’s Silver Hammer!

PhilBoxing.com

Bob Arum and Erik “El Terrible” Morales must get their act together lest they will be left on the sideline with the proverbial empty bag without out even a penny in it.

As what we learned, their option clause for a trilogy with Manny Pacquiao can be invoked within six months after the duo’s rematch last January 21 in Las Vegas, United States. Like those made in mainland China basement priced “A” battery, it has a lifespan till July 22, 2006.

All those pronouncements of Bob Arum to fill up the 26,000-setter Sam Boyd Stadium in Las Vegas will turn to naught in September. This unless Team Pacquaio will sign a new contract for a September bout and the 132 lbs limit for El Terrible— who found it terribly costly in losing weight to 130 lbs.

Recently however, Tom Thomson of Tigerboxing.com emailed me that the Filipino southpaw’s manager Shelly Finkel told him that Finkel respect his ward’s decision to stick to 130 lbs.

Arum is facing a legal dilemma here, in law we have what we call as Rule or Evidence of Written Agreements. It means when the terms of an agreement have been reduced into writing, it is considered as containing all the terms agreed upon between parties and their successors in interest, no evidence of such terms other than the contents of the written agreement.

The provision I mentioned is part of the Rules of Court in the Philippines, which I believe has the same counterpart in the U.S. where the two teams concluded their latest contract. By the way, U.S jurisprudence is followed as precedence by the Philippine Court in some of her decisions.

With HBO and Oscar Larios pulling out of Pacman’s Manila tune-out fight because of the unstable political situation as assessed by the former, and the lack of publicity for his career without HBO as appraised by the latter. A possibility of Pacquiao-Marco Antonio “Baby Faced Assassin“ Barrera rematch looms in the horizon after July 22, 2006 as seen by those profit motivated Adam Smiths at Golden Boy Promotions. That’s why they wrote WBC’s Godfather Don Vito Corlionne., er.. Jose Sulaiman who eventually wrote to the Pacquiao Team to answer his letter within seven days upon receipt if Pacman -- as the Alphabet’s mandatory challenger -- will fight Barrera.

Forget what Freedie Roach said that Barrera instead fight Bobby Pacquiao because Manny was scheduled to clash with two fighters in July and September this year. Freddie baby is only a repairman and not even a barker of Bus Pacqauio. The decision whom to fight lies in Manager Finkel, the driver who has the discretion to take what routes he deems. Freddie's business is to mould, harness, his fighter, and be humorous sometimes -- nuthin’ more, nuthin’ less!

This rematch means excitement at its highest for us fight fans. This rematch means mega bucks for the two teams particularly.

Barrera is an astounding fighter. He is like Jesus Christ who rose from his rough death bed. But unlike Hesu-Kristo, Barrera didn’t fly economy to Heaven to be with his Daddy. Barrera resurrected himself after he was massacered by Pacquaio last November 15, 2003 at the Alamadome in San Antonio, Texas. He flew back and forth to the rings and reap his paybacks.

He washed this Texas humiliation with the bloods of Paulie Ayala, Mzonkie Fana, Robbie Peden, and arch rival Erik Morales.

Another analogy to appreciate Barrrera’s phenomenon was after he confronted a tragedy with his two wars with the hard hitting Junior Jones (this guy’s killer punch was acknowledged by Erik Morales who then pooh-poohed Pacman’s punches after their first fight. Not until he was overran by a Boeing 747 in their rematch).

In Barrera-Jones, a lot of folks learned for the first time the importance of speed in Rescue 101. If Barrera’s corner was able to save their Assassin in the 11th round of his Pacquiao’s expedition, Barrera’s corner had all the lightning speed of a Manila’s snatcher in saving their ward as Jones taught him arbitrarily how to dive to the canvas and do free style and butterfly in the 5th round. He nearly became Bad Lee Roy Brown who turned into a jigsaw puzzle when he was beaten by a jealous husband as sang by Country Singer Jim Croce (pronounced: Kroo cher).

But this Mexican Fistolero has lots of guts and class. He didn’t avail for a tune-up. He challenged Jones for a rematch immediately. To those of you who have eyes on the sequence of a suspenseful movie, y’ know what happened? Deplorably unlike in film, the Mexican hero lost again. But it was a decision. Experts said, he was tentative against Jones. After that he had six winning streak. This case was like what happened to Lennox Lewis when he was knocked out by Hasim Rahman. Lewis just had bad nights. Lewis as what we know vindicated the said loss by knocking to pulp Rahman on their rematch. The bad night of Barrera was blamed when he fled the wild fires of his training camp in Big Bear in California, the hullabaloo on his brain surgery and the metal embedded inside his skull, and his lack of fire inside -- this despite the fire that razed around the periphery of his apartment.

But after his defeat, he came out superbly in physical and tactical shape. Look the genius he had done to defeat the counter puncher in "El Terrible" in their rubber match.

“He is getting so much better all the time / its getting better all the time (2x)” as what John Lennon-Paul McCartney had composed.

To end this already lengthy article, was it Pacman or the Beatles who sang:

"Bang! Bang! Maxwell’s silver hammer came down upon his head / Clang! Clang! Maxwell’s silver hammer made sure he was dead."
