DONAIRE'S SENSATIONAL WIN SPURS PACQUIAO TO BEGIN TRAINING EARLY

PhilBoxing.com

Pound-for-pound king Manny Pacquiao, spurred on by the sensational 2nd round knockout victory of countryman Nonito ?The Filipino Flash? Donaire over WBC/WBO bantamweight champion Fernando ?KO-Chulito? Montiel, has decided to begin training earlier than previously announced for his battle against former three-time champion Shane Mosley at the MGM Grand Garden Arena on May 7.

Pacquiao had originally announced he would start training by mid-March with trainer Freddie Roach expected to plane in by the 13th and together with strength and conditioning guru Alex Ariza set up training camp in Baguio City.

Pacquiao who arrived with wife Jinkee at the Mandalay Bay Events Center entrance moments after Donaire had blasted Montiel, seemed eager to duplicate if not surpass the performance of Donaire and to maintain his standing as No.1 in the Ring Magazine pound-for-pound ranking where Donaire who is currently No. 3 may move up to No.2 should Floyd Mayweather Jr not sign up for a fight by May 10.

Top Rank promoter Bob Arum welcomed Pacquiao?s decision to begin training earlier than scheduled saying ?that?s good? because Arum has consistently maintained that Mosley is a tough opponent.

Celebrated trainer Freddie Roach has conceded that Mosley could be dangerous early in the fight just as he was against Floyd Mayweather Jr whom he rocked in the third round with a big right hand but couldn?t finish him off enabling the undefeated Mayweather to win a comfortable unanimous decision.

Pacquiao?s adviser Michael Koncz who is still in Los Angeles winding up some business affairs of Pacquiao told the Inquirer that he had asked Filipino trainers Restituto ?Buboy? Fernandez and Nonoy Neri to report to General Santos City on Monday to begin light training.

Koncz said present plans call for Pacquiao to drive up to Baguio and open their training camp in the Philippines summer capital on March 13.

Pacquiao plans to train for four weeks in the Philippines before flying to Los Angeles for the final four weeks of training at Roach?s Wild Card Gym.
