ABU DHABI REPRESENTATIVES ASK KONCZ TO STAY LONGER By Ronnie Nathanielsz PhilBoxing.com Thu, 05 Aug 2010 Manny Pacquiao?s adviser Michael Koncz has been asked to stay longer by the people he is dealing with in Abu Dhabi in a bid to stage the showdown between pound-for-pound king and ?Fighter of the Decade? Pacquiao and Antonio Margarito scheduled for November 13. Koncz himself informed insidesports.ph, Standard Today and Viva Sports that he was meeting with officials of the United Arab Emirates Sports Authority while Top Rank promoter Bob Arum who was finally able to also contact Koncz told us ?he surfaced and told me they had asked him to stay until Saturday although he doesn?t know whether that means they want to make a deal. He speculates that the fact that they asked him to stay over means that they are serious.? Arum said his position remains the same indicating ?it was prudent for him (Koncz) to go over there but I realistically didn?t believe that they are prepared to make any kind of deal.? At the same time Arum made it clear that ?its not to be ridiculed. He is trying. It may be a long shot but who knows. If it happens, its great.? Arum agreed with our observation that there are individuals who seek to make a deal by claiming they represent different entities when they really don?t have the authority. He said ?you are absolutely, 100 percent correct. That?s what happened in this case.? He said the supposed contact was not the right person but Koncz was ?able to meet with the proper people and so he is starting from scratch. That?s exactly what happened.? The Top Rank promoter also made it clear that the Dallas Cowboys Stadium venue for the Pacquiao-Margarito showdown ?is not the fallback, it?s the reality.? Arum also revealed that the planned WBC/WBO bantamweight title fight between champion Fernando Montiel of Mexico and WBA super flyweight interim champion Nonito ?The Filipino Flash? Donaire may end up on the Pacquiao-Margarito card after earlier indicating his plan was to put the fight on the Julio Cesar Chavez-Miguel Cotto light middleweight title fight on December 4 in Las Vegas. Arum told us ?there?s a difference of opinion whether we do it on the Chavez undercard or on the Pacquiao-Margarito card. It could go on either.? Donaire himself has made it known that he would like very much to be on the same card as Pacquiao. Click here to view a list of other articles written by Ronnie Nathanielsz. |
