PhilBoxing.com

Olympic hopeful Charly Suarez who is among a group of 14 select athletes in different disciplines from 13 countries being supported under the G4S teen program as potential medalists at the London Olympics in 2012 has won his opening round bout at the inaugural China Open in Guiyang,Guizhou Province, Tuesday.

G4S is the world?s largest security service provider and has some 600,000 employees around the world and recently opened it?s Philippine office in Makati City.

The talented featherweight Suarez hammered out a 9-5 win over a tough opponent in Syria?s Chaman Weesap to actually give the Philippine team its first victory in the ring.

The win of Suarez eased the disappointment of the twin losses sustained by lightweight Jameboy Vicera and light welteweight Mark John Melligen who are members of the seven-man RP boxing team backed by PLDT and Smart Communications headed by businessman-sportsman amd chairman of the Amateur Boxing Association of the Philippines (ABAP) Manny Pangilinan.

Suarez started strong and caught the backpedalling Weesap with effective and crisp combinations before scoring the Syrian was given a standing eight count towards the end of the opening round where the Filipino moved ahead comfortably 4-1.nd

Weesap then changed tactics beginning the third round and charged back aggressively to trim the lead of the 22 year old Suarez to a mere two points at 7-5.

Suarez who won the gold medal at last year?s Southeast Asian Games in Laos and a veteran of back-to-back world championship tournaments in Chicago and Milan, used his ring savvy and overall skill to dominate the final round to eventually score a comfortable victory.

In a post fight interview Suarez said ?my opponent was strong and I thought he would go down in the last round when I caught him with a combination that shook him.? The win assured Suarez of a quarter finals stint..

In the drawing of lots Monday morning light flyweight Gerson Nietes took a bye and assured the country of at least a bronze medal. Nietes faces rugged Idyaz Sulay-Minov of Kazakhstan in their semifinal encounter this Friday. n.

The opening night losses saw Vicera handily beaten by Farkany Radouane of France 10-2 while Melligen absorbed a lopsided 11-1 beating at the hands of Huricha Bilige of China.

Despite the setbacks ABAP Executive Director Ed Picson exuded confidence indicating they are en route to achieving their main mission since four more boxers are set to see action within the week in this AIBA-ranking event participated in by traditional boxing powerhouses from around the world led by Cuba and Russia.

Picson conceded ?Naturally we?re disappointed (with the losses) but that is precisely why we?re here - to gauge or strengths and pinpoint our weaknesses? even as he pointed out that ?What?s important is our boxers are constantly honed and exposed to quality competition.?

Wednesday?s action pits bantamweight Francis Palicte against Hongkong?s Cho Cheng Yu while Flyweight Rey Saludar will take on one of the top fighters of this tournament in 2008 Olympic gold medalist Zou Shimming of China in their own first round clash on Thursday.

Also on Thursday welterweight Wilfredo Lopez will battle Mutaz Don Duk of Jordan.

ABAP President Ricky Vargas and secretary-general Patrick Gregorio are scheduled to arrive Thursday night in China to personally assess the young fighters? progress and readiness to compete in several more international tournaments lined-up by the country?s amateur boxing body.

Also lending crucial support are the Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) and the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) whose chairman Harry Angping is expected to be on hand to witness the other bouts on Thursday.
