DONAIRE IN THE DARK ON DARCHINYAN REMATCH DETAILS By Ronnie Nathanielsz PhilBoxing.com Sun, 04 Apr 2010 Nonito ?The Filipino Flash? Donaire says he will never run away from a rematch with WBC/WBA super flyweight champion Vic Darchinyan but is in the dark as of now since he hasn?t seen a contract or heard any details about the fight. Some weeks ago Donaire?s promoter Bob Arum of Top Rank and Darchinyan?s promoter Gary Shaw both told insidesports.ph, Standard Today and Viva Sports that they had reached an agreement which Shaw said he had forwarded to Darchinyan?s manager Elias Nassar but hadn?t received a response. However, boxingscene.com?s Ryan Songalia quotes Shaw as saying he has a signed contract from Darchinyan to fight Donaire at the Home Dept Center in Carson, California on August 21 and that he is now waiting to hear from Arum ?to see if we have a deal.? It was Arum who told us that he had reached an agreement with Shaw and Shaw confirmed this which means that if Darchinyan has signed the fight should happen. Donaire for his part said that last week he had asked his lawyer Michael Miller ?to find out from Top Rank since they were supposed to meet with the Showtime people to get the fight to happen. I need to know the details but he hasn?t gotten back to me as yet.? Donaire noted that Darchinyan had the contract for almost two weeks but that he had ?never seen it. I don?t know what it is? including the date of the fight. The WBA super flyweight interim champion said he would begin serious training next week at the Undefeated Gym in San Carlos, California after talking to his close friend Andre Ward, the WBA super middleweight champion. Donaire disclosed that Ward told he had to get to the gym because ?this is your job and you?ve got to do it. I need to go back (to the gym) and since trainer Robert Garcia will be here next week I?ll be training hard next week.? Donaire scored a spectacular 5th round knockout over Darchinyan, 34-2-1 (27 KO?s) on July 7, 2007 in a fight which Ring Magazine named the "Knockout of the Year" as well as the "Upset of the Year." Darchinyan after his last win over Rodrigo Guerrero claimed Donaire was scared to give him a rematch, a claim which ?The Filipino Flash? laughed off saying he beat him once and he?ll beat him again. Shaw told Songalia that he was the hurdle to the rematch claiming that Donaire ?stiffed me by changing promoters. Obviously he switched and Darchinyan got the belts, all the fame on TV while Donaire has faded into darkness." Click here to view a list of other articles written by Ronnie Nathanielsz. |
