SHAW SAYS DARCHINYAN READY FOR DONAIRE REMATCH By Ronnie Nathanielsz PhilBoxing.com Fri, 04 Dec 2009 WBA super flyweight champion Vic “Raging Bull” Darchinyan’s promoter Gary Shaw says that after the Australian’s title defense against Mexico’s Tomas Rojas (32-11-1, 22 KO’s) he would be ready for a rematch with Nonito “The Filipino Flash” Donaire, currently (22-1, 14 KO’s) who won the IBF and IBO flyweight belts with a one-punch 5th round knockout of Darchinyan on July 7, 2007. Darchinyan at present has a record of 32-2-1, 26 KO’s. In an overseas telephone conversation with www.insidesports.ph, Standard Today and Viva Sports, Shaw said he had asked the WBA to rule that a purse bid be held for the proposed rematch. Shaw told us “Donaire is saying he wants to fight. Now let’s see whether he wants to fight or he wants to run.” Shaw said if he is able to work out a deal with Top Rank’s Bob Arum who promotes Donaire “then I think the fight will take place around April.” Darchinyan defends his WBA 115 pound title against Rojas at the Agua Caliente Casino, Rancho Mirage, California on December 12. The 33 year old southpaw Darchinyan lost his IBF bantamweight title in a twelve round unanimous decision to Joseph Agbeko last July 11 but before that hammered Jorge Arce into retiring in the 11th round in Darchinyan’s defense of his WBC/WBA and IBF super flyweight titles at the Honda Center in Anaheim, California on February 7. Rojas is 29 and is coming off a 8th round TKO of Everado Morales in an interim title fight on July 18 and then scored a unanimous twelve round decision over Evans Mbamba last October 24. Rojas gave former two-division world champion Gerry Penalosa of the Philippines a hard time before dropping a ten round unanimous decision at the Araneta Coliseum in Metro Manila on July 2, 2006. Shaw said Darchinyan who is training in Las Vegas is “looking very, very good and very strong” and noted that Darchinyan “has done very well against Mexicans because they come right at him and are standing straight so I believe that he might be able to knock out the opponent.” Shaw said Rojas “has a good punch” but doesn’t hit as hard as Darchinyan for sure. Donaire who is the current wba super flyweight interim champion is slated to fight on a “Pinoy Power III” fight card of Top Rank on February 13 at the Las Vegas Hilton and although the name of Gerson Guerrero has been mentioned as a likely opponent, Top Rank matchmaker Bruce Trampler told us on Tuesday they haven’t found an opponent for Donaire as yet although Donaire informed us he had begun training and is prepared to face anybody.
