MAYOR HAGEDORN HOSTS TITLE FIGHTS IN PUERTO PRINCESA

Mayor Edward Hagedorn is on top of a big boxing card at Puerto Princesa City this Saturday dubbed “HAMON SA PRINCESA which he is hosting.

The fight card is being staged in coordination with Johnny Elorde Management International, Philippine Amusements & Gaming Corporation, Department of Tourism and Lonsdale.

The card will feature back to back championship headlined by the defense of Women’s International Boxing Association (WIBA) Intercontinental Champion Gretchen Abaniel against No. 1 contender Tukta Sor Ratana of Thailand and the Philippines welterweight title fight between champion Arnel Tinampay against journeyman Yuri Noda.

The fights will be held at the spanking new, air-conditioned Puerto Princesa Coliseum which has a capacity of over 10,000.

Mayor Hagedorn, a very popular local official is personally overseeing this promotion together with Vice Mayor Lucilo Bayron and the City Council in an effort to to live up to Puerto Princesa’s drive to become the sports tourism capital of the country.

In fact Mayor Hagedorn expects a number of tourists to watch these fights while at the same time enjoying the many attractions in Puerto Princesa and Palawan.

Abaniel, who hails from Puerto Princesa City is making her first defence of this WIBA Title she won in 2007 against Li Hai Li of China here in Manila. Abaniel at present, also holds the WBC International Atomweight crown and is also expected to defend her title anytime this year. Before she turned professional, Abaniel was a bronze medalist in the World Amateur Championship in Russia.

In the other supporting bouts, Juan Martin “Bai” Elorde, grandson of the great Gabriel “Flash” Elorde and undefeated in his 6 pro fights is pitted against Romnick Dejano . The young Elorde, a former Palarong Pambansa gold medalist and a member of the Philippine Team turned pro last year.

Other bouts will see Philippine featherweight champion Vinvin Rufino clash with Thailand ’s No. 1 contender Kongsurin Sishshoei while another lady fighter from Puerto Princesa, Marnelle Verano will fight Teeraporn Pannimit of Thailand.

There will be more professional and amateur bouts to be featured. The amateur bouts will begin at 3:00 p.m. and the pro fights at 6:00 p.m.
