NIETES READY FOR FIRST TITLE DEFENSE
By Ronnie Nathanielsz PhilBoxing.com Wed, 27 Aug 2008

World Boxing Organization minimum weight champion Donnie ?Ahas? Nietes makes the first defense of his title against Nicaragua?s Eddy ?Torito II? Castro at the Waterfront Hotel in Cebu this Saturday.
The only problem Nietes faces is the fact that he hasn?t fought since winning the title on September 30 last year in a unanimous twelve round decision over Thailand?s Pornsawarn Kratingdaenggym.
Nietes who has only one defeat as against 22 wins and 3 draws with 13 knockouts has trained hard for his title defense against a tough-looking Nicaraguan who is ranked No. 9 by the WBO, No. 6 by the WBA Fedecaribe and No. 7 by the WBC Fecarbox.
Castro has a ring record of 12-3-1 with 9 knockouts but is actually coming off a loss on points in a six round bout against Roberto Meza last February 29. But before the loss Castro won two fights in a row by knockout.
He scored a first round KO over Pedro Ramos last November 24, 2007 and before that on October 27 won by a fifth round KO over Benjamin Mendoza.
Nietes? only defeat was nearly four years ago when he dropped a controversial split decision to tough Indonesian Angky Angota in the RCTI TV Studios in Jakarta on September 28, 2004.
Nietes whose nickname is ?Ahas? since he enters the ring with his pet python around his neck is expected to strangle the aggressive style of Castro with his boxing skills and nifty counter-punching.
The Nietes-Castro fight is the undercard on what promises to be an interesting fight card which will be telecast by the giant broadcast network ABS-CBN over Studio 23 beginning at 7:00 p.m. with a replay at 10:30 p.m. on Sunday on its pre-eminent Channel 2.
The fights will also be carried to a global audience by TFC, The Filipino Channel which has a wide audience among Filipinos abroad.
