Nine National Masters join the Touchmove event By Marlon Bernardino PhilBoxing.com Thu, 14 Aug 2025 A group of National Masters (NM) in the country lead the list of titled players participating in the Touchmove Invitational Open Rapid Chess Tournament at the atrium of SM City Mall on August 24 in Roxas City, Capiz. The tournament will follow a seven-round Swiss format, with each round featuring a time control of 15 minutes and an additional 3-second increment for each move. The Philippine NM title is significant for Filipino chess players, as it signifies a high level of skill and expertise. It is awarded by the National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP) to players who achieve a specific rating. The NM title also serves as a stepping stone for players aspiring to attain higher titles, such as FIDE Master, International Master (IM), and Grandmaster (GM). The nine NMs set to compete include Capiz's first-ever NM Francis Jocson; Iloilo's second NM Cesar Mariano; Guimaras' sole NM Fritz Bryan Porras; and Aklan's woman NM, Mira Mirano. Representing Negros Occidental are NM Edsel Montoya of La Carlota City, NM Ted Ian Montoyo of Bacolod City, and NM Edwin Tan of Victorias City. Additionally, Ilonggo NM Rommel Ganzon, now based in Cebu, will compete alongside NM Allan Cantonjos of Pasay City. "Everyone is prepared and in good condition; it's impossible to predict who will win the elusive Touchmove championship trophy," said Anthony Arcangeles, a veteran woodpusher and registered civil engineer from Capiz. P100,000 will earn the champion in this 1-day event hosted by sportsman Eduardo Basilonia.-Marlon Bernardino- Click here to view a list of other articles written by Marlon Bernardino. ![]() |
