RP BOXERS BACK IN THAILAND ONLY TO GET BEATEN

The partial lifting of the ban imposed by Games and Amusements Board chairman Eric Buhain on Filipino boxers fighting in Thailand without proper approval by the GAB hasn’t helped in turning things around since two boxers who fought in Bangkok have been beaten, one in an obvious mismatch.

Super bantamweight Joan De Guia who had a record of 4-4-2 with no knockouts lost a unanimous six round decision to Thailand’s Thitichon Singwancha whose record stood at 9-1 with 4 knockouts. But what was questioned by well-known boxing writer and photographer Scott Mallon was the bout between flyweight Richard Olisa who suffered a lopsided twelve round defeat in a Pan Asia Boxing Association title fight against Denkaosan Kaovichit.

The Thai champion who had beaten no less than sixteen Filipino fighters in the past including former world title challenger Randy Mangubat and had an impressive record of 38-1 with 16 knockouts was matched against Olisa whose record was 6-7-3 with 5 knockouts according to boxrec.com.

Mallon, in an email to Viva Sports/Manila Standard Today observed that the fight went twelve rounds but “it’s the longer beatings that have the more profound effects on the fighter. This fight wasn’t that bad but to say that Olisa had a decent chance of winning would be untrue. He had little to no chance. Isn’t that what a mismatch is? Granted he lasted the twelve rounds but when is it going to stop?”

Longtime boxing man and TV analyst Moy Lainez said that Olisa is a super flyweight but often does not train properly and that is why he was junked by managers Noli Mercado and Mandaluyong’s Tiger Gym. Lainez revealed that when Olisa was awarded a ninth round TKO win over Roberto Lerio in Binangonan in his last fight on June 1 it was actually a head-butt that decked Lerio as clearly shown in TV replays of “In This Corner”. Lainez said referee Ver Abainza apparently didn’t see the head-butt and awarded Orisa a TKO win.

Lainez also disclosed that last April 21 Orisa won a split decision over Armando Casas although he was mauled in the last two rounds and hardly threw a punch. Lainez said Orisa was six pounds overweight and had to wear heavier gloves.
