ATTY. SALUD WARNS, ARUM AND PACQUIAO WILL PAY A HEAVY PRICE

PhilBoxing.com

The founding secretary general of the WBC, the eminent lawyer Rudy Salud who is steeped in a sports background, says Top Rank promoter Bob Arum will “ultimately have to pay and pay through his nose for damages in the ‘tortuous interference’ damage suit” filed by Golden Boy Promotions against Arum in Los Angeles.

In an interview with Viva Sports/Manila Standard Today, Salud who was former commissioner of Asia’s premier professional basketball league – the Philippine Basketball Association – secretary general of the Games and Amusements Board as well as the Amateur Boxing Association of the Philippines and executive director of the Philippine Racing Commission warned that “unfortunately our own boy (Manny Pacquiao) will have to shell out his own damage payment in due time.”

The case of “tortuous interference” was filed after Pacquiao signed a seven-fight contract with Oscar De La Hoya’s outfit in mid-September last year and then some two months later signed a four-fight deal with Arum. Pacquiao took $500,000 from Golden Boy after signing and then received $1 million from Arum after he signed with Top Rank.

Arum claimed that Pacquiao was prohibited from signing with any promoter until after the third fight in Erik “El Terrible” Morales in their classic trilogy claiming the clause was included in the Morales bout contract. However, the executive director of the Nevada State Athletic Commission at that time, Marc Ratner revealed there was no such clause in the contract filed with the NSAC.

Salud believes that when Arum gets penalized he will “sort of pass it on to Pacquiao, Believe me.” Arum’s hold on Pacquiao which Pacquiao “has accepted and cannot question anymore is so general, so vague he can do all those things.” He posed the question, “why will Arum pay $1 million advance etc if he will not get his way?”

In the meantime, Salud said he agreed with the position of Golden Boy CEO Richard Schaefer who had earlier maintained they believed that they had the promotional rights to Pacquiao and there was no need for Golden Boy to compromise. He said “I believe in that. I think Golden Boy is just being civil and exploring the possibilities without compromising his positon” in the mediation conference called by a retired judge which is part of the California system aimed at trying to resolve lawsuits without going to trial.

Salud said while some pressure may be applied on Golden Boy Promotions and its CEO Richard Schaefer by media claiming he is being “arrogant” as one so-called source was reported to have said and that fight fans are being deprived of the fights they want to see because of Golden Boy’s refusal to compromise, Salud insisted that no matter what they say or would like to see happen. “honor, integrity and the law must be upheld.”

In a brief reaction to the claim of “arrogance” leveled against Golden Boy, Schaefer said he will honor the judge’s gag order but maintained that their position “has nothing to do with arrogance.”
