TEXAS COMMISSION REFUSES TO REVEAL PACQUIAO’S PURSE

PhilBoxing.com

The Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation which presumably received the fight contracts of Filipino ring idol Manny Pacquiao and Mexico’s Jorge Solis prior to the "Blaze of Glory"fight card at the Alamadome in San Antonio, last Sunday (Manila Time) has steadfastly refused to reveal the purses of the two fighters.

Public Information Officer Patrick Shaughnessy told Viva Sports/Manila Standard Today that the TDLR was “unable to release any of the provisions of the contract” pointing out that the agency had received a similar request before and the Office of the Attorney General issued an opinion which stated …’the submitted contracts are protected by the right of common law privacy and must be withheld.”

Shaughnessy said while the opinion was not rendered in response to our specific request it was issued in response to an Open Records request from another individual seeking copies of contracts for another combative sports event.

Despite being informed that we have been able to obtain purse information in the past from the Nevada State Athletic Commission and the commissions in California and New York, the Texas authorities stood firm.

Kevin Iole of the Las Vegas Review Journal reported that Pacquiao will “pick up a cool $2 million plus” which will, in fact, be more than the combined purses of Marco Antonio Barrera and Juan Manuel Marquez for their WBC super featherweight title fight last March as claimed by Top Rank promoter Bob Arum. The Nevada State Athletic Commission in response to a similar request from Viva Sports/Manila Standard Today promptly responded, reporting that Barrera received $1.2 million and Marquez $700,000.

In a separate communication Debbie Meyer of the TDLR said the Public Information Act “does not require a governmental body to inform a requestor if the requested information comes into existence after a request has been made. Meyer added, “please be aware that the Departmnent cannot provide purse information without a signed release by Mr. Solis and Mr. Pacquiao authorizing us to give you this information.”

Meyer said that without a signed release “we will be required to request a formal Attorney General opinion on whether the purse amount is confidential” adding that the Attorney General's Office “usually issues a ruling within 45 working days.”
