JAPAN UPDATE: SHIMODA, AIZAWA VICTORIOUS By Joe Koizumi PhilBoxing.com Tue, 10 Apr 2007 TOKYO, JAPAN -- WBC#9/WBA#13 super-bantam southpaw Takefumi Shimoda (15-1, 8 KOs), 121.75, a Floyd Mayweather stylist, captured the Japanese 122-pound belt as he dropped WBA#7/WBC#8 ranked defending champ Daisuke Yamanaka (20-3, 14 KOs), 121.5, in the second and third, and pounded out a nearly lopsided decision (99-91, 98-91 and 97-92) over ten heats on Monday in Tokyo, Japan. Shimoda, four years his junior at 22, was sharp enough from the outset, dropping the champ with a countering left just like Manny Pacquiao floored Eric Morales for the first time in their rematch. The beetle-haired youngster flattened the champ with a southpaw right hook thrown just at the bell to end the third, but Yamanaka stood up to resume fighting to be saved by the second bell (the time-keeper stroke the gong twice to terminate this round). Shimoda, a vastly talented speedster, battered the champ almost at will in the fourth and fifth, but failed to finish the affair because of Yamanaka's amazing durability. In the second half Shimoda was in command, but Yamanaka desperately attempted to retaliate with rough combinations and made it a hot contest. WBC#14 Kuniyuki Aizawa (13-1-1, 10 KOs), 114.75, kept his OPBF super-fly belt as he sent OPBF#2 ranked Korean champ Jinman Chun (6-1-1, 1 KO), 114.5, to the deck with a countering right in the second and decked a TKO win at the end of the sixth, when Chun retired on the stool because of bad bleeding from a gash around the left optic. Aizawa was sharper in trading jabs and one-two combos to the game and gutsy Korean, who kept stalking the champ regardless of his absorption of much punishment. Aizawa connected with good rights to hurt the game but less experienced Chun, who sustained a deep and wide laceration and kept bleeding profusely more and more as the contest progressed. Promoter: Misako Promotions. Matchmaker: Joe Koizumi (as for the Aizawa-Chun OPBF title bout). (4-9-07) Click here to view a list of other articles written by Joe Koizumi. |
