FAVORED FILIPINO FEMALE BOXERS GABUCO, PETECIO OUSTED IN ASIAN GAMES WOMEN?S BOXING COMPETITION

PhilBoxing.com

In a day of heartbreaks where Gilas Pilipinas blew a big lead that would have sent the Philippines into the Asian Games basketball semi finals, our two female boxers who were considered prime candidates for a medal finish in the boxing competition both fell in the quarter finals yesterday.

Flyweight Josie Gabuco who was ranked No. 1 in the world lost to talented Vietnamese fighter Le Thi Bang who was truly impressive in her round of 16 bout against Svetlana Veglina of Tajikistan winning by a unanimous decision.

Bang dominated the favored Filipina winning by a 40-36 shutout on the scorecards of two judges and 39-37 on the third.
The Vietnamese girl who failed to win a medal in the last Southeast Asian Games in Myanmar showed tremendous improvement while Gabuco who was unimpressive in defeating Chinese-Taipei?s Lin Yu Ting was off.

Lightweight Nesthy Petecio who looked good in overcoming Gulzhaina Ubbinizayoya of Kazakhstan in the round of 16 winning on the scorecards of two judges by 39-37 margins and a third judge who scored a 40-36 shut out for Petecio was also totally off in her crucial quarter finals showdown against lanky Jun Hua Yin of China who surprisingly got the nod of the judges in her bout with Thailand?s talented Thongjan despite being tagged often by the hard-hitting Thai girl.

Petecio was also beaten decisively by Yin who won on the scorecards of all three judges by margins of 40-36, 39-37 and 39-37.

Amateur Boxing Alliance of the Philippine executive director Ed Picson told the Manila Standard/Viva Sports that the two female boxers ?just couldn?t get going.?

He revealed that Gabuco ?had a fever the other night and still has a cold? which probably accounted for her lackluster showing but Picson added ?it's no excuse.?

Picson told us both Gabuco and Petecuio ?were both just flat.?
Gabuco won the gold Medal at the AIBA Women?s world championships in 2012 and was a three-times gold medalist in the Southeast Asian Games while Petecio was the lone gold medal winner at the prestigious China Open when she scored a stunning victory over New Zealand?s Alexis Pritchard who was 5?11? in height as against Petecio?s 5?3?.
