FIRST AIBA PRO BOXING SCHEDULED ON OCTOBER 2014

PhilBoxing.com

International Boxing Association (AIBA) president Wu Ching-kuo announced the launching of the association?s first professional event that will revolutionize the sport of boxing.

?The very first AIBA Pro Boxing (APB) tournament, scheduled for Oct. 24, will be another milestone in the development of boxing,? Wu was quoted by Central News Agency.

?Only the very best boxers in the world will compete against each other in a merit-based and comprehensive ranking system, with transparent and fair judging,? the 67-year-old AIBA leader said.

During his incumbency, Wu created the APB with the hope of reviving boxing as a popular sport by bringing back the enthusiasm of its fans.

Wu assumed the presidency of the 197-member AIBA in 2006, the first Taiwanese to head an international sports association.

He was re-elected in 2010 and has instituted several major changes, more than 50, in the sports body being run from 2007 to 2012, that includes marketing and promotion, women?s boxing, establishment of a boxing academy and adopting a zero-tolerance policy on any form of corruption or dishonesty.

Wu is the only Taiwanese on the International Olympic Committee executive board. Before he changed the AIBA Charter in 2007, there were no term limits on the presidency of the association. His predecessor, Anwar Chowdhry of Pakistan, was AIBA president from 1986 to 2006.

Meanwhile, AIBA Executive Director Ho Kim wrote all national member federations in a letter dated August 12, 2014 about the New AIBA Ranking System.

He informed all national presidents and secretaries general that at the recent AIBA executive committee meeting from July 15 to 18 in Istanbul, a new AIBA Ranking System was approved which includes the results of the competitions from the Continental Multi-Sports Games.

During the Asian Games which will be held at the end of next month, the boxers who perform well at this event will earn some ranking points, according to the memo.
