BANDITS YIELD TO PACMAN

PhilBoxing.com

GENERAL SANTOS CITY ? In Sarangani, the outlaws preferred to surrender to the Pinoy boxing legend than to the law enforcers.

Two notorious cattle rustlers operating in remote sitio (sub-village) Lanao Kapanglaw in Datal Bukay village, Glan town, Sarangani, yielded on Thursday to world eight-division boxing champion and Sarangani Representative Manny Pacquiao.

Prior to their surrender, brothers Roland and Jiboy Maguan, all under the Valdez Maguan bandit group, approached Michelle Lambot, a public school teacher assigned in the area, and signified their intention to give up banditry and start a new life.

But, under one condition ? they wanted to surrender to Pacquiao not to Glan Municipal Police.

Lambot said ?I?m scared because they kept on coming back to school asking for my help. They were afraid to surrender to the police. So, I exerted efforts to contact Congressman Pacquiao.?

Upon learning of their intention to surrender, Pacquiao never wasted a moment. He sent his own chopper Thursday morning to fetch Maguan brothers in Lanao Kapanglaw.

Around noontime on the same day, the two suspected cattle rustlers aboard a Pacquiao chopper arrived at the Sarangani Provincial capitol ground to meet the Pinoy ring icon.

They surrendered one improvised 12-gauge shotgun locally known as ?Surit-surit.?

When asked by reporters why did they choose to yield to Pacquiao rather than to the police, Jiboy said in local dialect ?We trust Manny Pacquiao than anybody else. We feel that we would be safe if we surrender to him.?

Pacquiao hailed the duo for their decision to surrender.

?I?ll do my best to help you start a new life. Thank you for your trust on me and for taking the courage to surrender,? Pacquiao told the bandits.

Pacquiao said he would ask the office of Vice Governor Jinkee Pacquiao to extend livelihood assistance to the former bandits.

?The office of the vice governor is engaged in various livelihood assistance. I will ask her to look at the plight of these people and determine what livelihood support can be given to them. This is to discourage them from engaging in illegal activities and to help them start a normal life,? Pacquiao said.

Pacquiao urged other mountain bandits, including insurgents, to give up the life of violence and embrace peace.

?The long arms of the law will eventually catch up on you. So, before something bad happens to you, it would be much better if you would decide to surrender,? Pacquiao said.

Sarangani Provincial Police Director, Senior Supt. Emmanuel Peralta confirmed that the Maguan brothers had been in the most-wanted list of Sarangani police due to their involvement in a series of cattle rustling and murder incidents.

?They are members of the notorious Valdez Maguan bandit group operating in Lanao Kapanglaw. Roland and Jiboy were among those charged with double murder case way back in 2010. They were included in the most-wanted list of Sarangani Police,? Peralta said.

According to Peralta, the group had been under the police?s surveillance for about 10 months already.

?I received reports that their leader and father, Valdez Maguan, would also yield himself if the surrender of his two sons turns out good,? Peralta bared. / By Aquiles Z. Zonio
