Russia to host Poland in must-win match

PhilBoxing.com

Lausanne, Switzerland, 07 March 2013 - In their first of two matches over two days, Russia welcome Hussars Poland knowing that, in light of Argentina Condors' win yesterday, nothing less victory will do if they have aspirations of reaching this season's World Series of Boxing (WSB) quarter-finals. This Group A clash on Friday 8 March (16:00 local time) at the Konti Sport Recreation Center in St Petersburg will see Petr Khamukov, reigning National Champion Dmitriy Bivol and hard-man Vitaly Kudukhov all take centre stage for the home team.

With two defeats on his travels for Russia, 21-year-old Evgeny Averin will be hoping for better luck on home soil when he battles Polish teenager Dawid Pawel Michelus who will be high on confidence after recording two successive wins in the competition. The away boxer will be slight favourite but this Bantamweight (50-54kg) bout is guaranteed to be highly entertaining.

Clever operator Konstantin Bogomazov will then lock horns with 24-year-old orthodox Pole Jacek Adam Wylezol at Lightweight (57-61kg) in an intriguing match-up. The young Russian has the skills to outbox an opponent yet to taste victory in WSB. Bogomazov will also be banking on the fervent support of the crowds to lift as he is well-know to thrive on a hot atmosphere.

After a solid win away in week six, Middleweight (68-73kg) Khamukov will make his first outing at home versus Polish 23-year-old Dawid Pac. With his rival having suffered three defeats on the trot, the orthodox Russian should be too quick and powerful and is odds on for his second win of the campaign.

Bivol is set for one tough afternoon against the Hussars' hard Ukrainian Serhiy Radchenko at Light Heavyweight (80-85kg) with his opponent a hard-hitting no-nonsense competitor. This should be an extremely close contest between two proven fighters. The 22-year-old Russian will be eager to impress on his home turf but will have to be weary of the explosiveness of his rival if he is to claim the win.

At Heavyweight (91+kg), Kudukhov will be gunning for victory when he faces the Hussars' Yan Sudzilouski from Belorussia after having only been deployed on the road. The two met in week two with the Russian hard man edging it by split decision. It was riveting contest and the fans in the arena will be salivating at the prospect of seeing this two once again in action.

Russia then face Argentina Condors on Saturday. Poland need the victory if they want to ensure a third place finish in the group.
