Argentina end Algeria's season with scintillating victory (5-0)

PhilBoxing.com

Lausanne, Switzerland, 07 March 2013 - Argentina Condors took a massive step towards qualification to the World Series of Boxing (WSB) quarter-finals after defeating Algeria Desert Hawks at the Club Social Y Deportivo in Santa Clara del Mar. The clever Juan Javier Carrasco Herrera, the hard-hitting Carlos Castano and Condors poster-boy Yamil Perlata were instrumental in the home team's victory in Group A.

An intelligent performance by 23-year-old southpaw Alberto Ezequiel Melian got the Condors off to a perfect start after the speedy Bantamweight (50-54kg) notched up his second win of the season with a classy defeat of the Hawks' French pro boxer Vincent Legrand. The young Argentine mixed it up well to dominate each of the five rounds, boxing clever on the inside and on the counter to give his team the early lead in the match.

Carrasco Herrera was simply irresistible in the Lightweight (57-61kg) bout versus unknown Algerian teenager Laid Douadi with the experienced Argentine dictating proceedings right from the off. The 20-year-old orthodox boxer was unrelenting as he unloaded some punishing shots to the body throughout the first four rounds. Carrasco Herrera wrapped up the win with a TKO in round five to put the Condors 2-0 up.

Despite being at a big height disadvantage, the impressive Argentine speed-merchant Castano had too much about him for Algeria's Abdelmalek Rahou in the Middleweight (68-73kg) contest. The explosive 23-year-old Castano was simply too powerful for his rival, as he unleashed some sensational shots to the body. After being on the receiving end of some vicious blows in the second, Rahou could not face the prospect of another round against Castano and threw in the towel, handing the Argentine a victory by TKO on his WSB debut.

The flamboyant Peralta consolidated his position at the top of the Light Heavyweight (80-85kg) rankings after the 21-year-old overcome the strong challenge of the Hawks' tough Frenchman Matthieu Bauderlique in an entertaining fight. Peralta's unrelenting style and height had him dominant as his long jab and precise body shots saw him score on the judges' scorecards, confirming his status as one of the rising stars of Argentine boxing with another confident performance. Bauderlique though can look back a solid season.

At Heavyweight (91+kg), impressive Malian Aboulaye Diane looked on course to rescue some pride for Algeria Desert Hawks after the compact orthodox fighter took the first two rounds against Argentina's Luis Miguel Bravo. A spectacular show of character by Bravo saw him come back strong to overturn his early deficit to win by split decision.

Argentina now travel to St Petersburg to face Russia on Saturday 9 March.
