RUBY NICANOR ON TO THE WOMEN'S NATIONAL TRAINING POOL By Maloney L. Samaco PhilBoxing.com Sun, 24 Feb 2013 ![]() The lone gold medalist for the host Maasin City during the recently concluded National Boxing Championships was a lady boxer in the person of Ruby Nicanor. She won the gold in the junior girls' flyweight division by outpointing Liezl Mae Alde of General Santos City. During last year's national championships, Nicanor settled for the silver medal. This year she hurdled a tough opponent in Judith Balasangay of Norhtern Samar in the semifinals to advance to the gold medal round. In the day of the finals, the City Gym was filled with students of Maasin City National High School where she was enrolled as a junior student. Even students from other colleges were there to cheer the lone woman entry in the host city's team. Round one was even for both girls as they gamely exchange fists and were too cautious of each others' punches. But rounds two and three proved to be Ruby's chance to pile up points against the good defense of the lady boxer from GenSan. The training and coaching staff of the Amateur Boxing Alliances in the Philippines were impressed by Nicanor's performance and this earned her a ticket to Baguio City for the ABAP national training pool. In Maasin, she was the only remaining active lady fighter so we have difficulty finding a march for her and had not fought in her hometown for quite a long time now. She was only able to fight in the national competitions. In Bago City, during the Visayas leg, she was unable to climb the ring also because of the lack of opponent. During the SCOOP sa Maasin, I told national and local media, that the greatest hope for an Olympic gold medal for the country is from our lady boxers. Ruby Nicanor is our contribution for that quest.
