Sumptuous Mexico inflict first season defeat on Azerbaijan (5-0)

PhilBoxing.com

Lausanne, Switzerland, 23 February 2013 - Mexico Guerreros are now almost guaranteed second place in World Series of Boxing (WSB) Group A after a scintillating display at fortress Foro Polanco saw them power past the visiting Azerbaijan Baku Fires. Top talent Elias Emigio, unbeaten Marvin Cabrera and hard-hitting Isaac Munoz-Gutierrez were the stars of the show as the home team recorded their fifth victory of the season to preserve their unbeaten record at home.

Classy Bantamweight (50-54kg) Emigdio cemented his place at the top of the individual ranking with his fifth victory of the campaign after a dominant performance against the Fires' 25-year-old orthodox fighter Orzubek Shayimov. The lightning-quick 21-year-old Mexican had too much about him, unleashing series after series of devastating combination punches throughout the five rounds to extend his WSB record to 13-2 and give his team the early advantage in the tie.

After struggling in the first two rounds against Azeri southpaw Isa Isayev, Mexican teenager Fernando Alvarez Diaz somehow turned on the style in the latter stages to unexpectedly give his team a 2-0 cushion in the match. The 19-year-old orthodox fighter was exhilarating, mixing poise and precision to defeat his Lightweight (57-61kg) rival after completely switching the balance of power with renewed aggression and an intelligent selection of power punches.

Cabrera then also extended his unbeaten run to four this season after a comprehensive defeat of experienced Belarusian Middleweight (68-73kg) Mahamed Nurudzinau. The young Mexican southpaw dominated the final rounds with some bright and precise shots with the left hook doing most of the damage over his less-fit opponents. Cabrera was in complete control, unloading at will to take the bout with panache. There was no faulting Nurudzinau's performance, but on the night the Mexican teenager was on another level and was a worthy winner of the bout.

Fast and furious puncher Munoz Gutierrez made those body shots count in the early stages of his Light Heavyweight (80-85kg) bout against savvy Georgian Iago Kiziria with the 20-year-old displaying his full repertoire of shots and impressively gaining the upper hand over his opponent in each of the five rounds. Munoz Gutierrez was simply unstoppable, unloading everything he had in his locker to claim his fourth victory of the season to move up to second in the individual ranking.

The final bout of the night saw the Heavyweight (91+kg) clash between the Guerreros' Puerto Rican Gerardo Miguel Bisbal Melero and Azeri orthodox Uzeypat Ismailov. The action did not disappoint with the two going toe-to-toe right from the off. Bisbal Melero was boxing to the crowd, trying everything to entertain the fans in the packed arena. The tactic seemed to work with Bisbal Melero looking highly motivated and eager to give the spectators a good show. The 28-year-old Puerto Rican was hungry for victory and after underperforming in the first, found his rhythm to give his new team the balance.

Both teams have now one match each left to play in Group A. Both should remain in their current positions, They will be eagerly awaiting the results of the other Group with Mexico set to challenge the second placed team in Group B for a place in the semis.

Relive the match
