Quality Poland power past visiting Argentina (4-1)

PhilBoxing.com

Lausanne, Switzerland, 08 February 2013 - The World Series of Boxing (WSB) Group A encounter between Hussars Poland and Argentina Condors at the Hala Znicz in Pruszkow was a pulsating affair between two teams battling it out for quarter-final qualification. Poland lined-up their best boxers and it paid dividends as the unbeaten Mateusz Mazik, the rangy Adil Aslanov, Polish star Tomasz Jablonski and Mateusz Malujda all recorded victories to give the hosts that vital win on the night.

The speed and endeavour of Argentine pocket dynamo Fernando Martinez saw the Condors orthodox dominate the early exchanges against 23-year-old Polish southpaw Mazik in the opening contest of the night. Mazik battled straight back however, throwing the jab and boxing at distance to claim the second round of their Bantamweight (50-54kg) contest in style. The two threw everything they had in their arsenal which made for compulsive viewing, but it was the more calculating Hussars boxer who was getting through with his punches as his bigger frame made the difference in rounds three and four. Mazik was calm and composed in the final stages, seeing out the fight to make it three wins from three in his debut season.

Poland's Aslanov, after his confidence-boosting victory against Vazgen Safaryants in week six, looked inspired as he battled impressive Argentine teenager Ronan Nahuel Sanchez at Lightweight (57-61kg). The orthodox Aslanov's long reach was highly effective with the 21-year-old's jab and the straight one-twos seeing him counter the threat posed by his speedy opponent. After dominating the first four rounds, Aslanov had done enough to take the win and give his team a 2-0 cushion in the tie.

Hussars poster-boy Jablonski was in all-action mode in the Middleweight (68-73kg) bout versus tricky 25-year-old Argentine orthodox Juan Jose Velasco Chanampa. The 24-year-old Pole took time to find his rhythm after being surprised by the speed of his rival, but after losing the first round, came back strong and some clever combinations saw him completely dominant in the second. From then on, Jablonski was in the ascendency, showcasing his full repertoire of skills, even showboating on his way to a well-taken victory to maintain his unbeaten start to the season.

Condors superstar and London 2012 Olympian Yamil Peralta from Argentina continued his barnstorming start to the season with another expertly taken win against the Hussars' Ukrainian 25-year-old Light Heavyweight (80-85kg) Serhiy Radchenko. The tall 21-year-old Argentine's all-action style and tremendous work rate were too much for his rival as his speed and reach saw him dominated each of the five rounds. Peralta confirmed his status as the rising star of boxing in Argentina as he recorded his fourth win of the season to cement his place at the top of the individual rankings.

After dominating the first two rounds of the Heavyweight (+91kg) showdown, Poland's uncompromising pro fighter Malujda was simply outstanding against 30-year-old WSB debutant Facundo Cesar Ghiclione. Malujda drew his opponent in to fight at close quarters and this enthralling battle had the spectators on the edge of their seats as the two traded punch after punch. A sledgehammer of a left hook by Malujda had the Argentine in all sorts of trouble in the third but Ghiclione managed to survive. This bruising fight continued in the fourth with Ghiclione pinning the home boxer on the ropes and unloading some punishment. It was a highly entertaining fight with the two colossi giving everything they had but in the end it was Malujda who had done enough to win.

Poland now travel to Algeria to face the Desert Hawks at the Salle Hocine-Chaalane on Friday 22 February whilst Argentina have a home match versus Russia at the Estadio Polideportivo Municipal a day later.
