Berinchyk and Usyk on song as Ukraine overpower Germany (5-0)

PhilBoxing.com

Lausanne, Switzerland, 01 February 2013 - Ukraine Otamans were simply irresistible at the Acco International Exhibition Center in Kiev as they completely overwhelmed the visiting German Eagles in their World Series of Boxing (WSB) Group B encounter. Olympic silver medallist Denys Berinchyk wowed the crowds with his all-action display before World and Olympic Champion Oleksandr Usyk brought the show to a close with a stunning win as the hosts were completely dominant throughout.

It was a determined performance by diminutive Ukrainian Ivan Ilnytskyy in the night's opening contest at Bantamweight (50-54kg), with the 22-year-old working hard, keeping his guard up and moving inside to great effect as he dominated the first three rounds against the Eagles' 20-year-old Dane Mohamad Ismail Sadik. Ilnytskyy showed great heart and was composed and precise with his punches with some telling overhead combinations hurting his opponent one more than one occasion. The 159cm, 5ft2? tall Ukrainian really turned on the style in this one to record a first career WSB victory to the delight of both his corner and the home fans.

The highly anticipated Lightweight (57-61kg) showdown began with a spectacular entrance from World and Olympic silver medallist Berinchyk with him dressed in the traditional Cossak outfit, including the signature hat and sword, as he made his way into the ring to face German orthodox Artur Schmidt. It was as expected a highly explosive encounter with the two battling it out in the centre of the ring in the first two rounds. The 24-year-old Ukrainian exquisite uppercuts were really connecting with their intended target as Schmidt struggled to contain the power of his rival. Very exciting throughout, the fans in the packed arena were really enjoying the show. Berinchyk, who was often switching stance, continued dishing out the punishment and in the fourth that pressure told as Schmidt took a standing eight count. In the end, it was comfortable for the Ukrainian as he claimed a sensational victory to double his team's advantage in the tie. Berinchyk confirming he really is box-office.

The Otamans' impressive Middleweight (68-73kg) Dmytro Mytrofanov then locked horns with the Eagles' Moldovan southpaw Vasilii Belous. The 23-year-old orthodox Ukrainian was bright and clever from the onset, constantly applying the pressure and harrying his taller opponent to impose his style on the fight. Working the body well and constantly pegging his rival onto the ropes before unleashing some powerful combination, Mytrofanov was dominant throughout. A huge right hand the highlight of round four. The Ukrainian never stopped moving forward and underlined his status as one of the toughest boxers at this weight with a sumptuous victory against an experienced opponent.

27-year-old Ukrainian Denys Poyatsyka towered over Xhek Paskali in the Light Heavyweight (80-85kg) bout and used that advantage to great effect in the first round as his long reach allowed him to keep his German rival at bay. Paskali began to find his rhythm and after connecting with some good overhead rights following some good head movement, the 22-year-old German found himself back in the contest after taking round two. Poyatsyka though came back with much more conviction to crank up the pressure in the third and fourth, and his power told as he took control of the closing stages to claim his second win of the season.

Superstar Usyk then battled 22-year-old German orthodox Eric Brechlin in the final contest of the night at Heavyweight (91+kg). The Ukrainian southpaw's selection of shots in the first were just a teaser of things to come as he looked to get a feel for his rival early on. Slowly but surely Usyk began picking the Eagles fighter apart and a succession of huge left hooks midway through the third round saw Brechlin take two successive standing eight counts and as a result the German corner threw in the towel, Usyk winning by TKO to make a resounding win for the home team

Ukraine next host Dolce & Gabbana Italia Thunder on Friday 8 February whilst Germany are away to the USA knockouts a day later.
