WBO ORDERS GORRES-MONTIEL PURSE BID By Salven L. Lagumbay PhilBoxing.com Sun, 12 Nov 2006 LOS ANGELES--The World Boxing Organization (WBO) has ordered the camps of its superfly champion Fernando Montiel and mandatory challenger Z 'The Dream' Gorres to participate in a purse bidding to be held on November 17 in Puerto Rico. The purse bid was ordered by the WBO's championship committee following the request sent by Gorres' promoter Sammy Gello-ani to conduct the proceeding, after it was found out that Montiel's camp was trying to arrange another fight for their fighter, disregarding Gorres' mandatory status. Gello-ani, in an interview last week, said that he did not want to see a repeat of the Brian Viloria-Juanito Rubillar case where the latter was denied his mandatory status and ended up fighting in an elimination fight in Thailand. WBO president Francisco 'Paco' Valcarcel will supervise the purse bid, with starting bid set at $100,000. Whoever wins the bid gets the right to promote the fight. Gorres will be represented in the bidding process by international matchmaker Sampson Lewkowicz. Golden Boy Promotions, which promote both fighters, had earlier informed Gello-ani that Montiel's camp had not signed the contract to fight Gorres, and did not seem keen on honoring the Filipino's mandatory status. Meanwhile, Gorres' Filipino trainer Edito 'Ala' Villamor informed in an interview yesterday that his ward will be ready for Montiel, and that they are confident that Gorres will have the key to unseat the champion. Villamor said that Gorres had seen one of Montiel's more recent fights, and confided that the champ is beatable. Click here to view a list of other articles written by Salven L. Lagumbay. ![]() |
