PAGARA ON HIS REMATCH WITH MONTOYA: ?I WILL KNOCK HIM OUT?

PhilBoxing.com

CEBU CITY ? Promising Filipino light welterweight Jason Pagara, still feeling the effects from his stinging loss to Mexican visitor Rosbel Montoya last September that stalled his rise to the top, declared during today's press conference held at the Waterfront Hotel & Casino that he will knock out his tormentor when they meet in a rematch this coming Saturday.

?Yes, I will do my best to knock him out,? Pagara, who has 17 stoppages to his credit in 30 fights, boldly responded when asked how he would defeat Montoya. ?Last time we met, I was not able to knock him out and he was not able to knock me out as well, but this time there will be a knockout,? added Pagara, who is out to avenge the only other blemish of his record and who has personally requested the ALA management to arrange this rematch.

Bravado aside, it looks like it will be an uphill climb for Pagara, who is decidedly the underdog in the rematch. Montoya, 27, nicknamed Lobito (wolf) with a formidable record of 36 wins, 4 losses and 1 draw with 30 knockouts, appeared in the press conference, and since he arrived in Cebu yesterday, with an unmistakable aura of confidence who seemed to be only waiting for the appropriate time to strike on his prey. Asked what is his advantage over Pagara was, Lobito calmly said, ?my experience.?

There is a dent in that experience however, as Montoya lost via 6th round knockout in his last fight in March against Argentinian Claudio Alfredo Olmedo for the Interim WBO light welter title. Montoya said he had lacked preparation in his last fight coupled with some personal problems, exactly the same reasons Pagara said on why he lost to Montoya the first time around ? which makes Saturday's fight, aside from being a make or break for both fighters, highly interesting.

In the other attraction, rising star Genesis Servania (18-0-0, 6KO), fresh from his scintillating performances over veteran opponents in his last several fights and who will face Mexican Jorge Pazos (21-3-0, 14KO) on Saturday, said ?I will not become overconfident with my opponent. I have not seen his fights but I will see what I will do when we're on top of the ring.? Pazos, on the other hand, said ?I have came from afar, I have come here to achieve victory.?

Comebacking Jimrex Jaca (34-6-3, 19KO) found extra motivation when he was called ?a boxer with no power? by his Mexican opponent Angel Martinez (13-2-1, 9KO) in published Internet reports. Martinez however, denied saying it and told the media he is not the type of person who will say bad things against his opponents. ?I respect my fellow boxers,? Martinez said. Jaca, still piqued, in return would not accept Martinez's turn around. ?After he saw me, he has changed his tune, but I read in the Internet what he said,? Jaca said who also reportedly told a friend in private that he will send Martinez, nicknamed 'Arcangel' ? to heaven.

In the undercards, Jason's younger brother Prince Albert Pagara (11-0-0, 9KO) takes on Alvin Makiling (9-4-3, 2KO) of Bukidnon in an 8-round contest; Mark Vincent Bernaldez (5-0-0, 4KO) will exchange mitts with Jo-as Aparicio (8-7-0, 6KO) of Bukidnon for 6 rounds; Juren Labordo (4-0-0, 1KO) takes on Powell Balaba (2-7-1, 1KO); Crowd favorite Jojo Intor is pitted against Peter Aldrin and JP Artieda goes against Hector Rojoca.

Pinoy Pride XV The Rematch Philippines vs Mexico official weigh-in will be held at the SM City Cebu starting at 11 am Friday.
