Sonsona Wrests RP Super-Flyweight Title from Barcelona By Epifanio M. Almeda PhilBoxing.com Sun, 21 May 2006 Counter-punching teenager Eden Sonsona landed just enough clean punches while enduring foul blows from defending champion Eric Barcelona to win by split decision the RP Super-Flyweight title last night at the Ynares Plaza Gymnasium, Binangonan, Rizal. Scores were 115-112, 113-114 and 115-112. Sonsona showed no respect for the onrushing champion by holding his ground with accurate counter punches. The first round ended with blood oozing from Barcelona’s nose. The fighters then engaged in give and take exchanges in the ensuing rounds to the delight of the crowd. Midway in the 5th round, Barcelona landed two succeeding rights below the belt sending Sonsona on all fours grimacing in pain. Referee Ferdie Estrella gave Barcelona a warning while allowing Sonsona time to recover. In the 11th round, Barcelona landed another low blow which cost him a point deduction. Barcelona gave all he got in the 12th round including rabbit and punches to the legs but Sonsona survived the all-out attack to win the title in his first attempt. In the main supporting bout, RP No. 1 super-bantamweight Bernabe Concepcion landed a few power blows just enough to convince two judges to give him a split decision win over a determined No. 10 contender Jake Verano in their 10-round scuffle. When the hometown boy’s win was announced, boos from the crowd were overheard. Scores were 96-94 and 98-94 for Concepcion, and 96-94 for Verano. In the other two 10-rounders, No. 6 RP flyweight Danilo Lerio out-punched No. 10 Louie Bantigue to win by unanimous decision. PBF No. 5 bantamweight Ernel Fontanilla was too strong for John Ray Verano who could no longer endure the hard shots to the body that he surrendered the fight as he fell at 1’ 46” in the 5th round. Other results: Juri Noda beat Julius Tarona by majority decision over 8 rounds in their lightweight bout. Tata Fontanilla scored a 28 second demolition of Rhyan Soliveres in their 6-round super-flyweight fight. Rashed Bacus KO’d Jared Verano at 59 seconds in the 4th round of their 4-round minimum-weight fight. Edwin Dignos beat Irwin Pulvera by the identical unanimous scores of 39-36 in their 4-round flyweight fight. Marlon Villanueva KO’d James Troy Gliane at 1’ 04” of the 2nd round in their 4-round minimum-weight fight. Click here to view a list of other articles written by Epifanio M. Almeda. |
