MAYOL SPARS AGAINST TOPNOTCH GYM RATS!
By Salven L. Lagumbay PhilBoxing.com Thu, 13 Apr 2006
Just hours ago, undefeated WBC no. 1 minimumweight Rodel "Batang Mandaue" Mayol revealed that he has been sparring against top-notch fighters to prepare for his May 6 crack at WBC 105-lb king Eagle Kyowa.
The Kyowa-Mayol rumble, which unwraps at the famed Korakuen Hall of Tokyo, will be aired live in the Philippines via Solar Sports, the undisputed sports channel in the country.
Among those who have been tapped to spar with the heavy-fisted Mayol are one-time WBA minimumweight challenger Yukka Gejon, Wyndel Janiola, Pingping Tepura, Apolonio Suico and Jerope Mercado.
"I'm really doing my best to come up with a great gameplan. I know Kyowa will be looking out for my left hand, but he should be more worried of my other hand," said Mayol, the 105-lb fireball from Mandaue City.
Meanwhile, noted sportsman and boxing manager Rex "Wakee" Salud informed this writer yesterday that he will be flying to Japan for the Mayol-Kyowa bout, to make sure he will be at ringside when two of the world's best small men duke it out for the 'green belt.'
"I have a standing invitation from Yasuo Matsuoka, Mayol's manager. I think I should go," said Salud, a Manny Pacquiao business associate, from his lairs in Cebu City
