Pacquiao Started for His Pacman Basketball Team in MVBA Tourney Opening PhilBoxing.com Mon, 27 Feb 2006 ILIGAN CITY -- Montana Pawnshop-Davao eked out a 79-78 overtime thriller over PacMan-General Santos in a fitting start to the inaugural season of the Mindanao Visayas Basketball Association (MVBA) at the packed Mindanao State University-Iligan Institute of Technology Gym Saturday (February 25). Montana's Mark Legarde scored on a lay-up with five seconds to go and tie the count at 70-70 all and force the overtime. In the overtime, Montana guard Ryan Abanes tied the game with 30 ticks left with a triple, 78-78. PacMan flubbed its next possession and with the specter of a second overtime nearing, Randy Panerio drew a foul off PacMan?s Dondon Tadena with only two seconds on the clock. Panerio calmly sank his first free throw and then missed his second shot. A mad scramble for the ball ensued as the time expired. World boxing champion Manny Pacquiao started for his very own PacMan squad, but it was Montana forward Mark Bonifacio who earned the distinction of scoring the first two points in league history. Pacquiao eventually provided the first and his only points for his side via a twisting lay-up much to the delight of the fans. Dado Ayson scored 16 of his 22 points in the second half to lead Montana. Panerio followed with 15, including the game winning point. Norberto Farochillen topped PacMan with 17 followed by Tadena with 15. In the main game, host Iligan City used a strong start and a strong finish to thwart visiting Pryce Pharma-Misamis Oriental, 91-88. Marvin Tundag banged in two triples and Eric Araman added eight points as Iligan took a 21-point advantage at the halftime break, 57-36. Slowly, Pryce Pharma chipped at Iligan?s lead. Orville Saludsod and Jason Alfeche combined cut their deficit and Dondon Mendoza made two free throws to close in by six at the 40-second mark, 80-86. Timely hits by Araman and three free throws by Michael Serino saved the game for Iligan. Bognot finished with 21 while Tundag chipped in 18 for the winners. Alfeche paced Pryce with 17. Gunner James Laygo shot 14 but was limited to only a sole field goal in the second half. As part of the MVBA opening ceremonies earlier in the day, Pacquiao scored 14 points as he played with Mayor Lawrence Cruz and the Iligan Executives as they beat MVBA Chairman Gov. Oscar S. Moreno and the Misamis Oriental Executives in an exhibition game, 56-52.
