Bacon outpoints Verano, Egera edges Magbanua at the I.T. Park

PhilBoxing.com

James Bacon of the ALA Gym won by unanimous decision over Jake Verano of Cagayan de Oro in the main event of the rain soaked ALA-Cobra ?Tunay na Lakas?: Boxing?s Best fight card held Saturday night at the I.T. Park in Lahug, Cebu City.

Bacon relied on a stiff jab and hooks to the body early on but Verano hung around despite being hurt on several occasions. Verano landed a few significant counters but was deducted a point in round seven for an accidental head butt that inflicted a cut on Bacon?s right eyebrow. The scorecards after ten rounds read 93-93 on all three judges.

Jason Egera of Siaton beat Rolando Magbanua of the Braveheart Stable of North Cotabato by split decision after ten rounds. Magbanua managed to cut the ring early and trap Egera on the ropes. But the southpaw Egera got out of trouble and was eager to exchange punches. The fight continued amidst a drizzle as the action went back and forth.

It was still anybody?s fight past the halfway mark but neither boxer landed a punch that was significant enough. Egera managed to pull it off with his performance in the last two rounds. The scores: Two judges had it 96-94 for Egera, one judge scored 96-94 for Magbanua.

In the undercards, Albert Pagara, Basilio (Boyce) Sultan and Michael Romarate had successful pro debuts. Pagara used a hard liver shot and won by TKO in 32 seconds of the second round over Sandy Cajil.

Sultan scored with a sneaky right uppercut and won by unanimous decision over Justin Gacos. The scores read 40-35, 40-35 and 39-36. Gacos was deducted a point in the 3rd round for excessive head butting.

Romarate won by TKO at 1:09 of the 4th and final round over a battered Rando Espeleta.

Albert Pagara is the brother of teenage lightweight star Jason Pagara while Boyce Sultan is the brother of former WBF welterweight champ Dondon ?The Supremo? Sultan.

Jomar Cordinillo won by six round unanimous decision over Marlon Talili. The scorecards of the three judges read 58-56. In the first bout of the evening, Melvin Gumban won by unanimous decision over Crispin Salvador. The scores ? 40-36, 39-36 and 40-36.

Fight time was delayed for more than two hours in this open air ?free to the public event? due to the non-stop rains. But there were still many enthusiastic boxing fans who stayed and witnessed the action.
