Viloria, Cuello, Mayol, and Sabaupan all make weight for Boxing at the Bay 5 By Carlo Pamintuan PhilBoxing.com Fri, 05 Nov 2010 The weigh-in for Friday?s Boxing at the Bay 5 fight card was held this Thursday with fighters, managers, trainers, sports scribes, and officials flocking into Gerry?s Grill at Silver City. Brian Viloria arrived with his entourage a few minutes before the event started and immediately said hi to well-wishers. The former champion was cool and collected, even managing to play a game of chess on his iPad while waiting for the weigh-in to commence. A flock of individuals coming in and out of the building pressed their faces against the glass windows around Gerry?s to get a glimpse of the former world champion. Viloria weighed in first and was measured to be at 112 pounds, right on the button. His opponent, Liempetch Sor Veerapol, weighed in at 111 pounds. Next up were Denver Cuello and Kongkrai Kiatpracha. Cuello weighed in at 109 pounds while his Thai opponent weighed in at 105.5 pounds. The match was scheduled to be fought at light flyweight division but the Games and Amusements Board allow fighters to weigh in up to a pound overweight if there is no title at stake. Rodel Mayol also weighed in a pound over the flyweight limit at 113 pounds while his opponent from Thailand, Pompetch Twins Gym, weighed in exactly at 112 pounds. The big boys were up next as Al Sabaupan and Arnel Dunal walked to the stage. In what is billed to the battle of undefeated fighters, Sabaupan was also a pound overweight while Dunal weighed in at 135 pounds. This was not a title fight but the two camps have agreed earlier that they will strictly comply with the lightweight limit so Sabaupan was asked to lose the last pound. The brawler from Elmer Anuran?s stable stayed under the hot sun, chewed on gum, and spat as often as he could to eliminate a pound of fluids. Anuran said that the fight between Dunal and Sabaupan could possibly steal the show. ?They are both undefeated so it?s going to be hard,? Anuran said. ?Al seems to be in a hurry when he fights because he always finishes his opponents early, but he?ll have a tougher time with Dunal than his last opponent,? he added. Sabaupan was very confident even after having a hard time making weight. ?I?ll always go for the knockout because that?s what the people come to see,? he said. Viloria said he was feeling great and that he?ll prove come fight night that he trained hard for this fight. The rest of the weigh-in went without a problem as all the fighters in the undercard made weight. Click here to view a list of other articles written by Carlo Pamintuan. |
