Boxing at the Bay 5: Viloria promises better performance By Carlo Pamintuan PhilBoxing.com Thu, 04 Nov 2010 Brian Viloria was his usual courteous self in the press conference held at Gerry?s Grill in Tomas Morato. The former world champion said he didn?t want to predict the outcome of the fight but he said that the fans should expect a better performance than the one he had against Omar Soto. Viloria is still with Ruben Gomez who was with him since the start of his professional career but he will be without Frank Liles, the former WBA super middleweight champion, as he had to attend to family matters. In his stead, Gomez decided to tap Mario Morales, an esteemed Mexican trainer who has handled former world champions such as the late Edwin Valero and Daniel Ponce de Leon. Gomez said that Morales was his initial choice to train Viloria in the fight against Soto but he was unavailable at that time so he went with Liles instead. He also added that Morales wants to help Viloria re-ignite the fire in his belly and make him fight as intense as he was before. Liempetch Sor Veerapol did not speak any English so his manager, Michel Do, did the talking for him. He said that Sor Veerapol is ready for whatever Viloria has to offer. ?The only way to fight Brian is to meet him in the center of the ring and trade with him,? Do added. Sor Veerapol also described how he was able to get an insanely fast knockout in his last win. ?I just moved forward and threw a one-two, after that I hit him with a left hook and it was over,? Veerapol said through his manager. Sor Veerapol?s left hook is his best punch and he plans to land it regularly come fight night. The Hawaiian Punch is already within the 112 pound weight limit while the Thai still has a couple of pounds to lose before the weigh in. Viloria disagreed with the Thai when he said that they will trade with him at the center of the ring. ?He is a counter-puncher. He basically waits for his opponent to attack then he counters so I should be the one pressing the action and that is what I intend to do,? he said. Viloria is scheduled to get married in December to his lovely fianc?e but all the wedding preparations were all put on hold for this fight. ?I?ve been training for three months now and I can?t wait until Friday, I wish we were already fighting this afternoon.? ?Boxing is my life,? he added, ?we can get back to the preparations after the fight but right now, my fight on Friday is the only thing on my mind.? Gomez added that Viloria sparred over 120 rounds against various sparring partners including lightweight champion Giovani Segura while Do boasted that his ward trained with Thai world champions Pongsaklek Wonjongkam and Oleydong Sithsamerchai. Both fighters promised an action-packed fight come Friday so expect an exciting night of boxing as SOLARtv and Solar Sports presents Boxing at the Bay 5: Friday Fight Fest. Tickets are still available in all SM Cinemas and at the Ynares Sports Arena on Friday. Click here to view a list of other articles written by Carlo Pamintuan. |
