MAGBOO PULLS OUT OF WBO ORIENTAL CHAMPIONSHIP PhilBoxing.com Fri, 27 Aug 2010 World Boxing Organization (WBO) Oriental superbantamweight champion Nino Magboo has pulled out of his Aug. 30 title defense against North Cotabato's Rolando "Smooth Operator" Magbanua because of what his handlers claimed was a boil that grew in his left armpit. Event matchmaker Rudy Perez said the event would be moved to a date approximately two weeks later but it is doubtful if he would still be facing the 25-year-old Magbanua as the North Cotabato boxer has been scheduled to travel to the US after the fight with Magboo to serve as sparring partner for World Boxing Council (WBC) flyweight silver champion Edrin "The Sting" Dapudong. Magbanua's manager, former North Cotabato governor Manny Pinol said he will not allow Magbanua to fight without the presence of Braveheart Boxing Club's chief trainer Noli Pinol who will be travelling with Dapudong on Sept. 4 to the US for the championship fight against NABO and Mexican flyweight champion Wilbert Uicab in Cancun, Mexico on Sept. 17. "If the fight will be moved to a week later, Magbanua definitely won't be able to fight because I and Noli along with Dapudong will already be in the US by then and Magbanua may even join Dapudong's team as sparring partner. The flight schedules have been arranged and we cannot change that anymore," he said. "I will not allow Magbanua to fight without the chief trainer in his corner," he added. The former governor, however, said he understood the decision of the handlers of Magboo to withdraw their boxer from the fight. "That's understandable. A good manager should see to it that his fighter is in top shape when he gets inside the ring especially for important fights," Pinol said. The Magboo-Magbanua Oriental title fight was earlier billed as the best local matchup for 2010 as it would have featured two of the best superbantamweights in the country today. Magboo, who was supposed to make the first defense of his title, holds a record of 12 wins with 5 KOs, 1 loss and 1 draw while Magbanua has a record of 18 wins, 13 KOs with 1 loss. Earlier, Pinol expressed excitement over the prospect of pitting Magbanua against Magboo as it would have been a good opportunity to test the level of excellence of the North Cotabato fighter who is being lined up by international promoter Sampson Lewkowicz and matchmaker Sammy Gelloani for big fights abroad. |
