Dapudong defends WBC Silver flyweight title against Uicab Sept. 17 in Mexico PhilBoxing.com Mon, 09 Aug 2010 World Boxing Council (WBC) Silver Flyweight champion Edrin "The Sting" Dapudong of North Cotabato, the Philippines will defend his title Sept. 17 against the reigning North American Boxing Federation (NABF) and Mexican Flyweight champion Wilbert "Hurricane" Uicab in a 12-round bout in the resort city of Cancun in Mexico. It will be the 24-year-old Dapudong's first defense of the title he won June 19 by a sensational first round knockout over former world-ranked No. 1 flyweight Jesus Jimenez in Tepic City, Nayarit, Mexico. Uicab, 26, who won five of his last 10 fights by knockout, will be making his first attempt to win a world championship. He has a record of 29 wins with 18 KOs, 5 losses and 1 draw and will enjoy the advantage of fighting before a hometown crowd being based in Cancun. "We are not taking this fight lightly. Uicab is a dangerous opponent and we expect this to be a rugged engagement," said former North Cotabato governor Manny Pinol, Dapudong's uncle and manager. The 5' 5"-tall Dapudong, labeled the "Barefoot Boxing Prince" by sports journalist Recah Trinidad, Dapudong being a product of the barefoot boxing program started by then governor Pinol, has been training since July in Kidapawan City at the foot of the country's highest mountain, Mt. Apo. Dapudong, North Cotabato's first world boxing champion, has a record of 23 wins, 11 KOs and 2 decision losses, one against former world champion Muhammad Rachman of Indonesia. He also scored 5 KOs in his last 10 fights. "We do not want to go through that experience again of preparing for an important fight for only two weeks," said Dapudong's chief trainer Noli Pinol, Manny's younger brother. In his fight against Jimenez, Dapudong only had two weeks to prepare because of the late notice. The fight against Uicab was initially scheduled for July 31, a little over a month after Dapudong won the title, but this was rejected by the Braveheart Boxing Club because of the short notice. Uicab was matched instead with William de Soussa Aug. 6, a fight which the Mexican and NABF champion won by 3rd round TKO. Manny Pinol said Dapudong and his team will move to Los Angeles two weeks before the fight to continue training at the Fortune Gym in Hollywood under the supervision of former Pacquiao conditioning coach Justin Fortune before proceeding to Cancun at least four days before the fight. "I want Edrin and Noli to move to the US early so that Justin could look after the last phase of the conditioning program," he added. Justine Fortune has been engaged by the Braveheart Boxing Club as co-trainer for the boys from North Cotabato and will join the Dapudong team in Cancun on Sept. 17. Pinol said he has asked Dapudong's international promoter Sampson Lewkowicz to include one more North Cotabato boxer in the undercard of the Dapudong-Uicab title fight so that the event would gain more interest among Filipino boxing fans. "I have asked Sammy (Gelloani) and Sampson to consider including bantamweight Rolando Magbanua in the undercard," he said. The Dapudong-Uicab championship bout is expected to be shown in the Philippines live via satellite. |
