Mayol may skip holidays for Mexico war
By Salven L. Lagumbay PhilBoxing.com Fri, 18 Nov 2005
Tokyo, Japan--Reigning Oriental and Pacific Boxing Federation minimumweight kingpin and WBC no. 1 Rodel Mayol revealed in an interview here yesterday that he may have to forego a planned Christmas vacation in the Philippines in order to pursue an all-out war preparation for his January 28 eliminator with WBC no. 2 Lorenzo Trejo in Cancun, Mexico.
The January 28 event in Cancun, Mexico will be held during the WBC`s Night of Champions, a by-invitation affair to be hosted by WBC president Jose Sulaiman.
WBC light flyweight champ Brian Viloria is also reportedly going to defend his title against Filipino Juanito Rubillar in another 12-round fight for the show.
Mayol is currently in Japan training alongside ex-WBC fly boss Malcolm Tu?acao, who is seeing action tomorrow against Thai Kumarnthong for the latter`s OPBF bantam belt.
The dynamite-fisted Mayol, training at the Dream Gym here, has been impressively sparring against bigger boxers in Japan, as he has proven too much against fighters his size while using bigger gloves during sparring sessions.
`If the contract finally arrives next week, I might be forced to stay put here in Japan for my training. I miss my family so much, but if my schedule asks me to fight this January, then I will have to spend my Christmas here,` Mayol said.
Meanwhile, the Mandaue City-raised Mayol has also assured his fans, who have started to be impatient as to his ring activity, that he is training as hard as ever in his quest for the world title.
`I hope they have not forgotten that I`m still around, its just that I`m training here in Japan as my manager, Yasuo Matsuoka, is based here. I`ll be back,` he assured.
