ATIENZA TO GRACE BOOM-BOOM BOUT By Salven L. Lagumbay PhilBoxing.com Mon, 07 Nov 2005 It will be a respite from the political grind when Manila Mayor Lito Atienza flies to the vacation paradise in Bohol to witness the mammoth November 19 "Bakbakan sa Tagbilaran" featuring World Boxing Organization Asia Pacific bantam king Rey "Boom Boom" Bautista in a titular defense against Tanzanian Obote "Thunder" Ameme at the Carlos P Garcia Sports Complex in Tagbilaran City. This was revealed Sunday evening by Tagbilaran City Mayor Dan Neri Lim, who faced Cebu's media in a press conference at an uptown diner together with Bautista, manager Antonio L. Aldeguer and promoter Sammy "Don King" Gello-ani. "Boom Boom" Bautista and Czar Amonsot tape their hands before plunging into hard training at the ALA Gym in preparation for their respective bouts on Nov. 19 in Tagbilaran City -- PHOTOS BY SALVEN LAGUMBAY "Mayor Atienza is a very dear friend, and a big supporter of Tagbilaran City. He will award the belt to the Bautista-Ameme winner," Lim told mediamen, indicating that the Manila mayor will surely not miss a date with destiny. "This is going to be the biggest boxing event in the history of Bohol," pointed out Lim, who is bankrolling the show in cooperation with the province of Bohol, headed by Governor Erico Aumentado. The Candijay native Bautista, the 18-year-old wonder boy from the ALA Gym of Cebu, defends his title only for the second time against Ameme since winning it last year against a Thai foe. In the co-feature, Tagbilaran City's Czar Amonsot is set to challenge WBO Asia Pacific junior lightweight king Victor Mausol of Indonesia in the other 12-round dukeout. "This is not going to be a commercial fight. This is a community involvement by and for all the Boholanos. After this fight, Bautista is no longer a Boholona, but a true Filipino," Lim waxed nationalistic. GAB chairman Eric Buhain, and PBA commissioner Noli Eala will also be invited to the event, as well as respected national sports columnists Recah Trinidad, Quinito Henson and boxing scholar Hermie Rivera. The rest of the card pits RP no. 3 lightflyweight and Along Denoy of Candijay against Rene Banares; Candijay's Arnel Tadena against Gil Abad; Ubay's AJ Banal versus Ronnie Saguing; Tagbilaran's Glen Masicampo versus Ubay's Villy Bullecer; Loay's John Carlos versus Cris Alag; Tagbilaran's Tiny Tyson versus Julius Cabusas. The curtain-raiser pits Jun Grumo versus Rashid Bacus. END Click here to view a list of other articles written by Salven L. Lagumbay. |
