Pacquiao may hand funds to Espi, says Pi?ol
By Salven L. Lagumbay PhilBoxing.com Sun, 06 Nov 2005
The proceeds did not exactly meet initial expectations, but the project was a big success mainly due to the assistance of Filipino ring icon Manny Pacquiao.
This was the assessment made by North Cotabato Governor Emmanuel Pi?ol moments after the 'Fight for Love' card Saturday night at the San Andres Civic and Sports Complex, which saw two RP title bouts take place in explosive fashion.
Pacquiao, who is set to meet Mexican top gun Erik Morales in a rematch on January 21, had promised to chip in P100,000 for the show, which was put up to raise funds for the legal battles of the former champ as he aims to collect an unpaid purse due him for a 1997 title defense in Koronadal, South Cotabato.
"Manny was a big help to this noble cause, as he will donate P100,000 which he used to buy tickets to the show and given out free to the public last Saturday," Pi?ol stressed.
The card saw RP lightweight boss Fernando Montilla and RP superfly champ Eric Barcelona retain their titles in impressive, yet contrasting, fashion. (Please see related story)
"My plan now is to let Manny Pacquiao personally hand the proceeds to Luisito Espinosa when they meet in the United States soon," added Pinol.
Pacquiao is set to depart for the US on November 11, accompanied by close associate Wakee Salud, as he takes part in a promotional blitz that is aimed at drumming up interest for the January 21 pay-per-view event in Las Vegas.
Morales, who prevailed in their first encounter, is also expected to take part in the promotional tour, although it was not known which cities in the US and Mexico the duo will be visiting.
Top Rank, headed by promoter Bob Arum, is arranging the event.
Pacquiao is slated to return to the country on November 18 and will then plunge into serious training in Cebu City for the Morales rematch.
