MELENDEZ GREETS GORRES AFTER FIGHT By Chito Yu Katangkatang PhilBoxing.com Tue, 25 May 2010 Despite a hurting rib after his KO loss to Michael Domingo, Luis Melendez approached Z Gorres on his seat to greet his former opponent in an emotional encounter. Melendez, through his interpreter asked Gorres how well he has been recovering from the brain surgery. He expressed his concern and told Gorres he never intended the damage caused by the punch on that fateful night. Melendez appeared to be very sincere in his apologies. He said he felt sad seeing Gorres in his condition but is also relieved seeing that he is fast recovering. Gorres in turn expressed his gratitude for the gestures shown by Melendez. They shook each other?s hand and Melendez even bent and gave Gorres a friendly embrace before proceeding to his locker room. The people around Gorres mostly composed of members of the press were very silent as they witnessed the very emotional encounter. Sportsmanship is an essential element in the brutal sport of boxing. In a full contact sport such as this, tragedies can happen inside the ring. But there is nothing personal. It?s all business. Business starts when the bell rings at the start of round one and should end at the end of the bout, whether it ends earlier or after the bell rings again at the end of the last round when fights go the distance. Gorres, is an example of a real sportsman. Despite his fate, he never took anything personally against the person who threw the punch that ended his very promising career. He knew he was just a victim of another accident, and that good things come out of every tragedy. He is just thankful that he is given another chance at life. He appreciates the good people and real friends who helped him recover and rise from his downfall. Gorres is a true inspiration not only to his stablemates but to all boxing fans and to all Filipinos.
