ARGENIS MENDEZ EDGES MARTIN HONORIO FOR IBF-USBA JUNIOR LIGHTWEIGHT TITLE By Jonathan Davis PhilBoxing.com Thu, 13 May 2010 Argenis Mendez eked out a majority decision victory over Mexican Martin Honorio, Saturday night at the Home Depot Center in Carson City, California, to claim the vacant IBF USBA Super Featherweight Title. The favored Martin Honorio, known as "El Brochas" and the reigning WBO-NABO Lightweight Champion who came down in weight for this championship fight, started strong, swarming the former Olympian Argenis Mendez from the Dominican Republic with combinations to the head and body, and getting the better of the exchanges in the early rounds. However, starting in the 5th round, Argenis Mendez began returning fire with well timed counters and fast flurries, and evading direct engagement with the bull rushing El Brochas, who could not keep up with his opponent's quick lateral movements. The younger Argenis Mendez sustained this effective adjustment until the end of the bout frustrating Martin Honorio who was constantly egging for a brawl. Two judges scored the bout 116-112 while the third judge turned in 114-114 for the majority decision verdict. In the co-feature and main attraction of this Goosen-Tutor Promotions, "Weight Is Over" what had been expected as an explosion turned out to be a dud instead with the aborted ending in the fourth round of the non title 12 rounder between former Welterweight Champions Paul "The Punisher" Williams and Kermit "The Killer" Cintron. After tentative action in the first 3 rounds, with Paul Williams cautiously throwing big jabs from the outside and Kermit Cintron content to counter punch, eliciting boos from the crowd, the two protagonists began unloading bombs in the 4th round. In one fierce exchange, the two got entangled with Paul Williams going down and Kermit Cintron tripping on him as he swung a punch. Cintron's momentum sent him plunging through the ropes onto the Official's table before finally landing on the floor hurting his back. Unable to continue, the fight was stopped and under California State Athletic Commission Rules, which had jurisdiction of the event, the fight went to the score cards. The scores were 40-36 and 39-37 for Williams and 40-36 for Cintron for a technical decision win for Paul Williams. The other results: Michael Dallas, Jr. kayoed Daniel Gonzales in the 2nd round in a super welterweight 4-rounder, Junior Middleweight Jeremiah Wiggins scored a 6-rounds unanimous decision over Juan Carlos Diaz, Michael Ruiz, Jr. won over Jose Pacheco by 2nd round TKO in a 4-rounds super bantamweight clash, Walter Sarnoi won by unanimous decision over Adrian Aleman in a junior featherweight 4-round battle, and, Stan Martyniouk squeaked a split decision over Brian Ramirez in their lightweight bout for 6 rounds.
