DONAIRE-DARCHIYAN FIGHT FELL THROUGH BECAUSE OF RP TV RIGHTS
By Ronnie Nathanielsz PhilBoxing.com Sun, 09 May 2010
The eagerly awaited rematch between Nonito ?The Filipino Flash? Donaire and Vic Darchinyan ultimately fell through because of a dispute over money for the Philippine television rights.
Darchinyan?s promoter Gary Shaw told us Darchinyan whom he handles and Donaire who is handled by Top Rank were not to blame for the collapse of the negotiations even as he tried to blame Bob Arum for what happened.
Shaw claimed ?Showtime was on board with the money. I agreed to split 50-50 with Top Rank even though we (Darchinyan? have two belts and Donaire holds none? effectively ignoring Donaire?s interim title. Shaw said he ?agreed that all sponsorship and all revenues from the site would be split 50-50 with Top Rank.?
However Shaw made it clear ?the only thing we could not agree upon was on the international TV rights. I felt that Top Rank was not being fair with me. They wanted to keep the Philippines where they said they didn?t get a lot of money and I believe they get good money from the Philippines.?
Shaw claimed that after five week?s when no deal was finalized, Darchinyan?s handlers were ?getting angrier and angrier that we could not close the deal. On Friday I got an email from Team Darchinyan that they feel one hundred percent disrespected and that the fight will not take place.?
He said Team Darchinyan ?has run out of patience and I was afraid they would of run out of patience with me.?
Shaw said Darchinyan and his team told him ?we don?t need Donaire? even as he emphasized that Darchiyan ?was not running from Donaire.?
