Top favorite Rizal Technological University of Mandaluyong City coasted to its third straight victory in two days after another easy 9-1 trampling of Dasmarinas of Cavite in regulation five-inning yesterday in the 2010 Cebuana Lhuillier National Open Softball Championships at the Baguio City Athletic Bowl here. The Blue Thunders of coach Noel Bumagat, who assumed the role as team to beat following defending champion Philippine Air Force?s withdrawal due to red alert, dominated throughout the one and-a-half encounter, scoring four runs right at the top of the opening frame. A single by Ulysses Mejia, who combined with Leo Barredo, Ronnie Pagkaliwagan in muzzling the Cavitenos to single run, drove home the Thunders? only needed marker with a single that sent Apol Rosales, who had earlier boarded on base-on-balls, across the plate. A sacrifice fly by Jerome Bacarisas, a base-hit by Oscar Bradwhaw and another single by Edwin Mercado had the Cavitenos reeling that they allowed the Amateur Softball Association of the Philippines Pilipinas Softball reigning champions reached home five more times in the succeeding plays in the same frame. Adamson University, likewise, poised to dominate the women?s division play of the annual series also supported by Pera Padala, Cebuana Insurance Solutions, Cebuna LhuillierBank, Phiten, Just Jewels and Le Soleil de Boracay, with a four-inning abbreviated 13-0 shutout of Besao of Benguet to pace the women?s division play over at the nearby Melvin Jones Park. Leftfielder Marissa dela Cruz walked, stole second and third then cruised home on a Besoa defender?s error in what proved the Lady Falcons? only needed run to score their second win in as many days although the Taft Ave. batters bunched together six more markers each in the second and third innings to complete the rout. Riza Bernardino struckout seven Besao batters and and Erica Escanuela two as they combined no-hitting the hapless opponents even as their teammates peppered Zenaida Cabuyan with eight, five in the second highlighted by Luzviminda Embudo?s solo homer. The Lady Falcons connected four more times in the next frame, including a two-run over the fence shot by Elma Parohinog. The RTU Lady Thunders matched the Lady Falcons? 2-0 win-loss card with a 7-6 edging of UAAP champion University of Santo Tomas in an extended eight-inning contest. Maricar Barrientos? two-run round-tripper spelled the difference as she broke a 6-all deadlock forged after seven completed frames. University of Cordillera of Baguio scored san upset of sort by surprising highly-touted Polytechnic University with a 2-0, also in the distaff side of the tournament. The Tigresses of UST though came back to the field later in the day by outlast5ing Caviote4 Province, 3-2. The 17-year-old right hand throwing teacher, who yielded four hits that produced five runs for the Lady Falcons, proved to have reserved her strength at bat blasting a two-run triple to center in the deciding lower half of he fifth inning that capped an almost day-long Adamson rally from a 2-5 deficit after three completed frames. Macatangay?s power shot drove home Marissa dela Cruz and Elvie Enterina and broke a 5-all stalemate forged an inning earlier. Dela Cruz had earlier took first on an error, while Enterina on a single. ?Ang ganda ng laro ng batang yan sa Philippine Series (Little League) kayak o siya ini-start. The Airmen, who were to seek a Third Jewel after also ruling the 2008 edition of the annual tourney supported by Pera Padala, Cebuana Lhuillier Insurance Solutions, Cebuana Lhuillier Bank, Phiten, Just Jewels and Le Soleil de Boracay, according to reports reaching the organizing Amateur Softball Association of the Philippines, failed to get dispatch service order from the PAF hierarchy. Abbreviated victories were the order of the day, at least in the early results, as the Mama-Sita?s-sponsored University of the Philippines blanked Besao of Benguet, 21-0, in only three frames, also in the distaff side of action. Not to be outdone, MS Marikina, likewise, reduced La Trinidad Valley, also of Benguet, 21-0. The tournament was declared open by Baguio City Mayor Peer Rey Bautista in the presence of ASAPHIL secretary general Danny Francisco, board member Randy Dizer and tournament director Jun Veloso.
