MARTIN HONORIO GUNS FOR USBA SUPER FEATHER TITLE VS. ARGENIS MENDEZ IN "WEIGHT IS OVER" MAIN UNDERCARD By Jonathan Davis PhilBoxing.com Tue, 27 Apr 2010 The vacant IBF/USBA Junior Lightweight Title will be up for grabs this coming May 8th as reigning WBO/NABO Lightweight Champion Martin Honorio drops down in weight to clash with 2004 Dominican Republic Olympian Argenis Mendez for the vacant USBA 130 lbs. crown in the main support to the Goosen-Tutor Promotions and the DiBella Entertainment presentation, "Weight Is Over" headlined by Paul the "Punisher" Williams vs. Kermit "El Asesino" Cintton, at the Home Depot Center in Carson City, Los Angeles, California. Known as "El Brochas" the Mexican Martin Honorio, (28-4-1, 14 KOs) has been on a 4-bout winning streak since rebounding from a shock first round knockout loss to Robert "Ghost" Guerrero in challenging for the latter's IBF Featherweight title. He had captured the vacant WBO/NABO and WBA/NABF Lightweight titles last November 2009 with an easy decision victory over previously unbeaten John Molina at the Pechanga Resort & Casino in Temecula, California, and successfully defended the unified titles in his fight against Wilton Hilario last month at the same venue. by a similar 12 rounds unanimous decision. On the other hand, highly talented Super Featherweight upstart and currently WBA No. 9 ranked contender, Argenis Mendez, (15-1. 9 KOs), who is being trained by former Junior Lightweight Champion Robert Garcia, is aiming for his first title, and confidently eyes his fight with El Brochas, as his coming out party, prelude to an inexorable march to the big times. The 23 year old Argenis Mendez, from San Juan dela Maguana, Dominican Republic, now based in New York, has only one blemish in his boxing record, a controversial split decision loss inflicted by Jaime Sandoval in an 8-round tiff in Denver, Colorado. Standing at 5'9, the fleet-footed and hard punching youngster has all the tools to hold his own or even score an upset in his Saturday evening clash with the more experienced and dangerous Martin Honorio. The co-feature bouts will be televised by HBO World Championship Boxing. IBF/USBA Supervisor, Ms. Hiawatha Knight of Detroit, Michigan will oversee this supporting 12-rounder title fight in coordination with the California State Athletic Commission (CSAC).
