HOPKINS CAPTURES WBC USNBC INTERIM WELTERWEIGHT TITLE By Jonathan Davis PhilBoxing.com Sun, 28 Mar 2010 ![]() A few hours ago at the world's biggest poker facility, Commerce Casino in LA, California, Demetrius "DHop the Gladiator" Hopkins captured the WBC USNBC Interim Welterweight Championship by defeating Jesse Feliciano by a unanimous decision over 10 one sided rounds. Scores were 100-90 (twice) and 100-91). The Puerto Rican born Jesse Feliciano, who now lives in Las Vegas, was a late substitute for former World Featherweight Champion, Freddie Norwood, Hopkin's original opponent. Demetrius Hopkins, 29-1-1 with 11 KOs, the nephew of Bernard "BHop, the Executioner" Hopkins was debuting at Welterweight after sowing fear in the Junior Welterweight ranks capped by a near conquest of Kendal Holt's WBC Junior Welterweight Title, losing by a controversial split decision in a bout he took only on a week's notice. Except for the 6th round wherein DHop rested and went on defensive mode, allowing the plodding Feliciano to rally with wild swings that were deftly blocked, the rest of the rounds saw Hopkins spearing Feliciano with jarring jabs on the face, alternating with fast combos to the body. Jesse Feliciano, whose record dropped to 15-9-3 should be rethinking his boxing career that seems lately to nosedive after an impressive start. The Championship bout, sanctioned by the California State Athletic Commission, was the third event put up by Chet Koerner and his TKO Boxing Promotions, famed for having ushered the nationally acclaimed "Hometown Heroes to World Champions" boxing series. Other Results: In the opening bout, Steve Fierro, 275 lbs. halted Michael Finney, 256 lbs., 27 seconds into the 2nd round for a TKO victory in their Heavyweight tussle. Dmitry Chudinov upped his win column to 4-0 by beating Fernando Calleros on a unanimous decision in a middleweight bout. Super Middleweight Leon Love TKOed Bryan Smith in the 2nd round for his 3rd consecutive win. Mikael Zewski won by TKO in a Junior Middleweight bout over Moses Alvizo, who quit on his stool on the 4th round on his corner's advicde. Fedor Chudinov stopped Jeremiah Jones by 2nd round TKO in a Super Middleweight fight. Super Featherweight Ivan Redkach, scored a 3rd round TKO over John Lopez upping his record to 3-0. In the most applauded bouts of the evening, standout amateur boxers Randy Caballero and Flavio Rodriguez, new recruits to the TKO Boxing Stable, both debuted to the Pro ranks impressively. Randy Caballero, bemedalled former Golden Gloves Amateur Champion, with over 200 amateur bouts behind him, needed just 49 seconds to stop Gonzalo "Chino" Nicolas in their Flyweight battle. The chniky eyed and formerly undefeated, Chino Nicolas was 5-0 going into the bout but was totally overwhelmed by the phenom Randy Caballero. forcing Referee Jerry Cantu to stop the bout and save Nicolas from further punishment. Likewise, Flavio Rodriguez made short work of Najee Hayes with a 3rd round TKO in their Welterweight encounter. Click here to view a list of other articles written by Jonathan Davis. ![]() |
