MARVIN SONSONA GUNS FOR SECOND WORLD TITLE VERSUS LEGENDARY SON PhilBoxing.com Sat, 02 Jan 2010 Cebu, Philippines – In what should be a intriguing match-up of young undefeated prospects, Marvin Sonsona who many believes will win multiple world champions have just inked the bout contract against son of the legend Wilfredo Vazquez, Jr. for the vacant WBO Jr. featherweight title. Together with his parents, manager Dr. Rajan Yraola and renowned Cebu promoter Sammy Gello-ani, the signing of the contract was held at Sonosona’s home town province at General Santos this past weekend. Team Sonsona is expected to depart to United States along with another young rising star, Ciso “Kid Terrible” Morales on January 2nd, and Morales is also vying for the world title against Fernando Montiel in Pinoy power III two weeks before Sonsona’s engagement with Wilfreo Vazquez, Jr. at Puerto Rico. The young star studded event will be fought at San Juan, Puerto Rico on February 27th, a formal press conference of Sonsona – Vazquez is set early January, hosted by Peter and Ivan Rivera of PR Boxing Promotions and will be attended by highly respected trainer Nonito Donaire, Sr., Sammy Gello-ani and no less the “Picasso” of boxing, Sampson Lewkowicz of United States who will be co-promoting the event. This writer got to speak to Sammy Gello-ani about the highly anticipated match and he believes that Marvin is in a good state of mind going into this fight, Gello-ani informed “of course, lots of fight fans who were disappointed in his last outing felt short changed because Sonsona did not make the weight which is understandable however, I really cant blame the young boy, his body is really growing and we cannot stop the growth of this kid, its mother nature. I rather be safe then sorry, a lot of people have big expectation from this kid, but my first priority is the welfare and health of Sonsona, his young and he can always win another world title when God permits, Gello-ani said. “The team believes that he will rebound in his next fight, like Paquiao moving up in weight to be a better boxer then ever. Marvin also will better without being dehydrated is what we are looking at and we believe that his natural weight should be at 122lb. This is how we have to look at it, we truly believe that Sonsona will be a world champion again, his talent is extra ordinary when he is fit to fight and comes February 27th we will be taking the belt home to our country Philippines,” explained Gello-ani. Meanwhile, all the respect goes to Philippines promoter Sammy Gello-ani for all the achievements he had done for Philippines boxing. Back to Back world championship for Sonsona is not normal, you really have to be in the game to make these kind of moves. “Kid Terrible” Morales versus Montiel on February 13th and of course his newly crowned champion Jhonreil Casimero who captured the Interim World WBO Jr. Flyweight title against former world champion Cesar Canchila at Nicaragua is a blessing. The truth, in a matter of fact Gello-ani’s consistency of providing fights for up-coming prospects like Sonsona, Morales and Casimero have been a success, despite of all the investment needed to keep going. In short, what all promoters would dream producing world champions is just high speculation that a boxer they invest on will be given a chance, especially if the fighter is not mandated as a challenger. However, without losing hope, Gello-ani accomplished the dreams he had vision and made it to fruition that makes him one of a kind promoter that is out to help boxing growth in the Philippines. Congratulation Gello-ani! Hats off to you, for helping Filipino fighters reach their goals of becoming world champions, may the New Year bring us more world champions in the Philippines. Surely, there will be more needs of your services. Top photo: Marvin Sonsona (C) signs the contract.
