FIGHT NIGHT AT THE COMMERCE
By Jonathan Davis PhilBoxing.com Sat, 19 Dec 2009
It was a night of the favorites at the Commerce Casino in Chet Koerner's just concluded TKO Boxing Promotions billed as "Fight Night at the Commerce". The supposedly 44 rounds of year-end boxing extravaganza featuring 9 pairs of bouts proceeded instead in quick endings. In the main event for 8 rounds, crowd darling, Leo "El Famoso Teremoto" Santa Cruz, 11-0-1 scored a 3rd round KO of hapless Juan Jose "El Pinocho" Beltran of Los Mochis Sinaloa, Mexico in a junior featherweight bout. The veteran journeyman Juan Jose Beltran who had fought several highly rated chalengers and world champions in his career, had been thought to give the fast rising El Teremoto (Tornado) a good fight, but instead was belted right from the first round, cut on the eyes in the second round and stopped for good in the third.
In the first of two companion 6-rounders, comebacking Edner "Cherry Bomb" Cherry, 134 lbs., coming down in weight from welterweight to lightweight, demolished Jovann "Scissorhands" Jones, 133 lbs. in the 3rd round after scoring knockdowns in the first and second rounds. The second supporting mainer saw Ugandan Sharif Bogere score a unanimous decision (60-54, and 59-55 twice) win over Mexican Christian Favela in their lightweight tussle.
The rest of the bouts:
Fidel Maldonado kayoed Brannies Nicolaus in a lightweight bout.
Ivan Redkach of Ukraine by first round KO over Napoleon Matthews in a lightweight encounter.
Zambian Hastings Bwalya by 3rd round KO over Anthony Mcdavitt in a welterweight fight.
The Chudinov brothers, both former Russian Amateur champions won their middleweight bouts (Fedor Chudinov by unanimous decision over Cesar Ibarra, and Dmitry Chudinov, by 3 round KO over Flavio Cardoza) Joseph Elegele by 3rd round KO over Juan Carlos Diaz
