New Boxing Show on ABS CBN Studio 23 Debuts July 25 PhilBoxing.com Sat, 18 Jul 2009 The country's biggest television network, ABS CBN, will air on Studio 23 starting July 25 a new weekly professional boxing program, Tomorrow's Champions, which will feature outstanding young fighters in the Philippines today. Hosted by Manny Pinol, former North Cotabato Governor and now vice governor of the same province, Tomorrow's Champions will be aired every Saturday from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. It will also be replayed on ABS CBN's international network, The Filipino Channel which is widely viewed in large Filipino communities in the US, Europe and the Middle East. Produced by the Braveheart Media Communications, it will feature recorded and edited fights of young Filipino fighters who are still largely unknown but who have the potentials of becoming boxing champions in the future. "This is part of our effort to show to the whole world that there is more to Philippine boxing than just the boxing icon Manny Pacquiao, that after him there will be other young Filipino boxing talents who could carry the nation's flag in the field of professional boxing," said Vice Gov. Pinol. In its initial presentation on July 25, Tomorrow's Champions will feature the World Boxing Organization (WBO) Oriental Junior Flyweight championship between defending champion Bert "Ninja" Batawang of Cebu City and challenger Edrin "The Sting" Dapudong of the Braveheart Boxing Club of North Cotabato. Staged April 25 at the historic Cebu Coliseum in Cebu City, the Batawang-Dapudong Oriental championship bout is considered a classic encounter between a veteran and grizzled ring warrior, the 36-year-old Batawang, and a young and untested challenger, the 23-year-old Dapudong. WBO Asia Pacific Vice President Leon Panoncillo, who supervised the fight at ringside, described the fight as "world-class" and a "must-see" for boxing fans. Also featured in the July 25 maiden telecast of Tomorrow's Champions is the tiny Rommel "Little Assassin" Asenjo, 20, who recently captured the WBO Oriental Miniflyweight title. On Aug. 1, in the second airing of the program, the controversial fight between undefeated Lorenzo "Thunderbolt" Villanueva, 23, and Eric Macas of Lanao del Norte, and the match up between WBO Interim Oriental bantamweight champion Rolando Magbanua and Donryll Marcos will be featured. |
